1) is there a good example of using a texture atlas (including the data)
2) is there a recommended product to use to pack the textures (i was thinking of using this : https://www.codeandweb.com/texturepacker)

any information on either of these points would be most welcome

I've attached a simple dice rolling app I created that uses a simple atlas texture which will hopefully explain things.

The basic rule is to make sure the subimage file is named correctly to reference the source image. So in this example the main image is called "dice.png" so the subimage needs to be called "dice subimages".

I just create the subimages file manually in notepad but then I tend not to make large sprite sheets with lots of different images.
