Hi all,

Just wanted to let you all know that we released Geoscape3D today. This a great terrain modelling/texturing package. You can literally paint a landscape and select your textures and have it blend them all seamlessly. Lots of examples included, screen shots, auto-gen texture functions, .X object export and DarkBASIC Professional Matrix Export function coming next week. Trial version available, have fun!

Get to the Geoscape3D site by clicking the "World Building" drop-down menu (if it doesn't appear, refresh the site so you get the updated JS files).

Cheers,

Rich

Sounds fantastic. Maybe this will end the pain that is making landscapes in Bryce and exporting them . Cheers Rich!

Wow, the terrains made in it look creepily like Bryce terrains... guess that's a good sign seeing as Bryce is a most professional package .

A skit presented by the Rodent Troupe:

The Mouse launches Geoscape3d.

The Mouse is impressed.

The Mouse maximizes the window.

The Mouse clicks on the display.

The Mouse is horrified by an access violation!

The Mouse recieves an access violation whenever he moves his cursor, but the mouselook still operates and the program never really crashes.

The Mouse has to close the program for fear of access violation sickness.

Heh, that could use a wee bit of debugging.

System--

Windows 98 SE (all updates)

Radeon 9500 Pro w/ Catalyst 3.9

1ghz AMD Athalon

384MB RAM

Cheers.

Edit-- Creepy, I can't duplicate the bug. I guess it's a nevermind then

Sounds like you didn't check the system requirements ... http://geoscape.thegamecreators.com/?f=system_requirements

You need XP or 2000. Anything else is just luck if it works

You're right, I certainly didn't .

No way I'm upgrading, not even for DBP

Well I'm one lucky bugger!

^_^ i hope that he is actually banned for good now Rich, noticed this when i logged in last nite. Looks pretty good and is nice and fast too.

the controls are realtively nice, but could do with being a lil less sensitive. perhaps the next incarnation will have some more art style tools, different brushes for the terrain rather than just solid or noisey ^_^
still pretty cool

Yes, I've just been using it, it's a very well designed program... I'm impressed with being able to manipulate the terrain in real time. Texturing is a bit clunky but works well. Cheers .

(Btw, who's banned?)

Geri, probably.
As for Geoscape, it reminds me very much of a terrain tool I had made in DBC (even the name was similar:GeoSculpt-GeoScape )
This looks much better, though

Yeah I banned Geri and forced his IP to redirect to www.loser.com if he tried to come back (not that this is foolproof, but it was amusing none-the-less).

Mouse - sorry about the problems, but 98SE ain't happening (system req's!).

I'm sure the developers will be happy to add in any extra tools you'd like to see. Personally I love sculpting in wireframe or point mode, it's so much easier to see what's going on and then just flick to texture to preview it all, calculate the lightmap and voila We've been working with Deliverance Software on this for months now, glad to see it finally out (and selling well!).

Cheers,

Rich

Mouse, what are you doing with Windows 98? Gotta upgrade that.

-----------------------

Overall, Geoscape is a pretty efficient tool. Nice, simple, and easy. I was pretty much able to jump in and start using it right away.

Bah, I've never had problems with XP. Never (but then, I've never done anything that would risk something like this). Either way, if you dont want to switch to XP due to the GUI, you can make it look much like the classic look (my preference).

-------------------------------------------

As for Geoscape, I'll take a look at the demo later. I'm waiting for the news channel to update the delayed and closed list and hopefully it'll say that my schools off for today, and if it stays at a 2 hour delay, i wont have the time to download until this afternoon.

'Mouse, what are you doing with Windows 98? Gotta upgrade that.'

I'm doing DOS with it is what I'm doing

'XP Never, 98se Forever!'

Agreed!

Rich: I understand. For whatever reason, it seems to work flawlessly on my 98SE system, however. Perhaps because I have the latest free GDI+ DLLs? Just a guess.

If I ever buy a laptop or second PC, it'll be an XP one (as if you can even buy pre-prepared non-XP PCs anyways these days) ...

I don't get anything XP. My next pc will be used for programming a lot (like my crappy one now) especially .net stuff, the way i am headed, so, if it is stable enough, I am looking forward to Longhorn

Lol, XP can be better than all other OSs put together Well MS ones.

You dont like the visual stuff then change it.

You dont like the playful menus and pictures on folders then change it.

Bad news for ya, Loghorn is years away and XP is the best platform for .net, strange that.

Lol

I am a XP fan, live it, although i sometimes dont like the interface as much. BUT Having recently used programs, the control pannel and important stuff like PDF's of well used catalogs on the root start menu is quicker.

But hey, i got 95, 98, 98SE, Windows 2000 Pro, NT4 and XP round here. You know which ones i have ever used? 95 and XP

How much does this Geoscape cost btw? Just had a look at the screen, and it's a matrix editor, isn't it? .......

I always use matrices because they're by far the easiest thing to make levels with, and texture etc. But I don't like using them, because they're a lot slower than models ....

So what I don't get it whats good about a matrix editor program, when matrices are the easiest thing to edit yourself, but are also worse than models. It might be good if it's a fiver or something, but I have a feeling it's gonna cost more than that.

its about £40 i think, it can be used to make matrices but also saves to some other formats aswell.

Quote: "400 MHz Pentium II Processor "

I got 2.6 ghz

Quote: "Windows 2000 / XP (Home/Pro)"

I have XP

Quote: "20 MB of hard disk space "

I have more than enough

Quote: "64 MB of Ram "

got 512

Quote: "Fully OpenGL compatible Graphics Card with 8 MB Memory or more
Video Card must accelerate OpenGL in hardware "

pretty sure im covered there

Quote: "Geoscape3D may work on other versions of Windows, but comes unsupported on them."

I have XP so this shouldn't bother me...

Quote: "Download the trial before purchasing. "

Im glad that I did

also, ive managed to keep it working long enough to work with textures. Is it possible to edit a specific tile's texture? there is not much documentation on how to do things so its mostly trail and error for me...

I also was able to make a small level and export it as a Dark basic matrix, but how do I load it into dark basic pro?

Im 101% sure

anyways...it appears the problem occurs when I try to change the "level hieght" values or when I switch between hieght units and meter units...
