Is there a more versatile language than DarkBASIC? I use DarkBASIC for proper games and Flash MX for 2D games but I want one that is relatively easy to use so I can make proper programs (like word processors or graphics programs). I don't want to have to spend too much on it though - preferably under 50 pounds (although this is very unrealistic).

Am I the only one here who's really confused?

Although there are some free C-based compilers out there.

for applications, I'm surprised CAttleRustler didn't say VB. It might be the way to go for apps.

Some of the older versions of vb are quite good and can be had for cheap on ebay etc. Just be carefull if you buy software from an auction. I use vb4 quite a bit, it's good for writeing quick programs.

Also look at delphi, previous versions are given away on cover disks and I think there might even be free downloads.

and if you like the DBP language, you could always go and buy the BlueGUI plugin, ever since i baught it i was very impressed. it's £7.50.

it may not be flexible enough for your needs, but it could be worth checking out

Borland Delphi version 6 or 7 Personal Edition. Comes on many cover disks for free (however, you are not allowed to sell apps compiled with the Personal Edition.)

You also have the Visual Basic Working Model where you can learn VB and run your programs in the IDE, but there is no compiler in that package so you can't crate standalone applications.

But it's good for learning. However, this only exist for older versions of Visual Basic, up to Visual Basic 6.

Also, I would second the suggestion to get some free version of Delphi. Delphi is Objekt Pascal, a language that is very similar to Basic. However, I still wouldn't call it an 'easy' language because it is nearly as powerful as C++ (only nearly though) and gives ample opportunities for confusion.

I got DevC++ (www.bloodshed.net) a free C++ compiler. Now I just need to figure out how to actually do anything in it...

Am I the only one here who's really confused?

you can access C/C++ Libraries directly
you have inline ASM
you have inline Compiler Commands
AmigaOS, Linux & Windows32 compatibility

plus it uses a standard BASIC setup
the libraries that come with it allow for standard Windows Operations, it has a Visual Designer as standard for Window based applications using the WinAPI, plus it has direct OpenGL access.

Essentially it's as versitile as C only in Basic format, plus it's cheap.
