Hello gals and guys.

As you may have noticed I've made on the Models and Media board, I've got an answer from Pain rather quickly (I must say that it was quite unexpected ! ) who gave me a temporary link to download the Modern Day Community Pack. To thank Pain, I gave it something to him/her in return. That's where an idea came into my mind.

You probably know it, FPSC is now twelve years old, in terms of "Internet time", that's an eternity ! Most of the users are now gone so long ago. They have just vanished or migrated to GameGuru, taking with them most of their custom media. Today most of the packs are nowhere-to-be-found. For instance, almost all of the packs that Cheesecake has made over the year are now impossible to find !
So I was thinking about the creation of a thread where, us, members, could trade old and now rare packs that have been released for free. One would make a request, and an other could fulfilling it. The trade would be done by PM to avoid spreading in case the creators wouldn't want to re-share their work. We could also release custom media if we want to. I think that would be a great thing to help each other that way.

What do you think about this ?

If you like the idea, put this one

If you don't, then put into your message.

@Madcow02

I do like the idea, I also was thinking of starting a project to host the media for download making it available to members that are still around.

The only thing I would be worried about is making sure we have permission from the Owners to make sure we are not breaking any agreements. Even though the media is old, it is still owned by the owner. We would need to get permission from the owner for either hosting and providing a download link for redistribution or permission to hand out upon request.

Other than that, I am totally down to put something together. I have a TON of FPSC Files while I am planning to move to the cloud soon for archive and so I do not worry about loosing the data.

My Thought was to either get a sticky in the Media forum here and provide download links for the media as I gain permission from the owners.
or
Create a website and provide download links.
(I would host the media from Google Drive since I have like 1TB free up there and its very easy to manage)

Pain, I must say that's because of the terms and conditions that I had the idea of trading media through PM, to avoid those "legal aspects". I know this isn't really cool but how will you ask for the author's permission if he walked away from FPSC ten years ago and since being nowhere to be found ?
BTW, I like your idea, alternatively we could create a repository full of old (and free) media that each of us have found across the internet during those long winter nights.

That way, there will be no need to request or trade anything, if we have something that we find interesting, we put it on the repository.

We would need to track them down.

I can start a Spread Sheet and share it out.

It is such a shame that nothing last forever on the internet.

The FPSC community used to be fantastic when it came to sharing free content
If something compiles on the first try. Something is terribly wrong.

They still are! We're just a lot smaller than we used to be.

When I got here, media was scarce and held tight. Users were trying to sell everything, even scripts, and you often had to pay someone to help you if you had a problem. A few years later as more and more users created content, there was a virtual plethora of free stuff. Today, we have some of the greatest minds, modders, and creators that ever walked these forums, but there are few users left. That's to be expected since the software is so outdated.

As for hosting/providing the media that is still available, there should be no "getting around the legal aspect" of it. Simply stated, content is owned by the creator and whether or not the creator has given it away in the past, we still need to get permission to make it available. You don't take someones car for a ride because he let someone borrow it before. You still need to get permission.

In my way of thinking, and to ensure a creators peace of mind, direct download links should be created from this forum. I've seen in the past where some has chosen to host FPSC content on their personal sites where they also allowed images and banners of a pornographic nature. I don't know about you, but I don't want people finding my content on such sites. I'm sure many parents would agree. If someone wants to host a site as we did in the past (it can be a lot of work) it should be approved by the creator as well, but links from here to a repository is the better option. When/if the forum goes away, another one will probably be created by us stubborn users.

My two cents...
Characters. You build them a world and what do they do? They moonwalk, get stuck in the walls and fall through the floors!

To Pain and XPlosys, but how are we supposed to find the ones that are totally gone ?
In most of the cases, their e-mail adress isn't working anymore.

It's just gone. I know it sucks, but is it what it is

I agree with Xplosys, don't share without consent.
My games never have bugs. They just develop random features..

Hi folks. Vandaarc has given permission to freely share his media he created for FPSC, no strings attached.

These include his derelicts and slums pack
https://forum.thegamecreators.com/thread/187392

His skies packs
https://forum.thegamecreators.com/thread/187500
And
https://forum.thegamecreators.com/thread/199742

And of course the Mega Fantasy Pack
https://forum.thegamecreators.com/thread/213637

Since he no longer works with FPSC and has moved on to other things, he has given permission to use his packs any way you wish.

I hope this helps.

Mmmh, thank you for the information, that's much appreciated we never have enough skyboxes !

Maybe we should do a post (not here) in which we gather all information and updates about who has been contacted and if they have accepted or not to have their media reuploaded. (like a very simple page that everyone of us could edit) ?

.
By the way, what did you have thought of my little gift, Pain ?

I'm happy to help. Vandaarc made some nice stuff, and it would be sad to see it fade into obscurity.

Also we could use the thread for updates regarding the log and to re-post (not re-upload) media that is still available on the forums as attached files]

Kafoolwho, are you a Deus Ex fan, by any chance ?

Lol I wonder what gave that away? Hehehe yes. Still a great game.

As for your thoughts on the new thread, I think it's a very good idea. We need to preserve these great FPSC assets before they are lost forever.

@ Madcow02

The Gift is pretty darn sweet! Thank you again I appreciate this. I have not had enough time to completely play with it yet (WORKING WAY TO-MANY HOURS) I will try to get some more time with it this weekend.

@ ALL,

I will start the Project named:

FPSCC Media Hosting.

This project will be hunting down the past owners of media and getting permission to host media. From there I will host the media from my Google drive which will be available until the day I die. (hopefully 65+ years from now)
This is my way of saying "thank you" for all the years here on the forums!

Does anyone here have any files from fps-free? I've read that that website had a lot of cool stuff.

Yeah, that brings back a lot memories.
I still have a lot of it, and permission to distribute in some cases. In many cases, we'll still need to contact the artists.

I'm sorry. Half of the message posted by me was for another thread. Since I was trying to multitask I mixed both of them up. Sorry!

@all,
Here is the spread sheet I have started:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aPOPqr_FgQRr2jvg3WBNrI1TReFNTlv-ditBA3v8b6s/edit?usp=sharing

Please feel free to fill it out as you track down and get permission.

Here is the folder to upload the files as you get permission. Please remember to link the files or at least the files names in the spread sheet or create folders to keep it organized.

Great idea.

Hammer out artist permissions and you've got a winner.

Been working too many hours lately. New house, Wife and 4 year old daughter and 60+ hours a week is a bad work life balance. I will get more time soon. The need of a network wizard is in short hands it appears and is always needed to put out the fires.

I've just added a line (in pink to show that I'm the one who has made the request) regarding AngelWINTER's Magic's Wall of Angel (a CSG Toolkit).
He and I are still in touch, so I expect an answer really soon.
