I recently released an ultra casual game on itch.io, called ORBITER. It's an HTML5 export, so it's play in browser and I plan on bringing it to mobile at some point.

Use left mouse to
- orbit the planet/change direction
- collect the stars
- don't crash into UFOs

If you want to try it out, here's the link to it:
https://hosch.itch.io/orbiter

Here is a short gameplay video:
https://twitter.com/i/status/1414174095323930625

Feedback is greatly appreciated.

Very simple, but cool.

Got an 18 early on but had a hard time beating that... beginners luck maybe.

Congratulations on your 39! You are the king of ORBITER! I'm currently looking into implementing leaderboards, but I'm afraid the server side setup is a little out of my league... for now

Just something I noticed today -- I was playing it on my laptop last night which has a 60hz screen and the game played fine. However it's a lot faster and more difficult on my 165hz monitor. I'm guessing you're using VSync only to limit the speed? I'd recommend either updating it to use time-based movement or capping the frame rate at 60 so that players on high refresh rate monitors aren't at such a disadvantage. Other than that it's fantastic.

YEAH, that's it (my excuse), because I was over 140mhz on the refresh rate... no wonder my score is so low compared to you guys.

EDIT

Oh yeah, that 60 mhz worked much better. . .

I cursed enough for a life time trying to break 50.

Seems too slow at start now, so I may set this display faster for practice then go back to 60 for the slow-mo.

I was experimenting finding nonces for leading zeros in sha256 hashes today and had my function running about a half an hour before I realized I had the default 30fps sync rate set.

Set that bad boy to unrestricted, which this rigs gets about 1800 to 1900 fps, and the fan kicked on in no time, but oh boy what a difference in the processing.

Slowed it down to 1500, then 1200, but still too hot, so 900 (about half the rig's max speed) seemed to work best. (still got hot but not too hot to let run)

So I am getting good results now considering using just a laptop, not any special mining processors.

Been testing that stuff for a new project I am working on, which is incorporating a Proof of Stake and Proof of Work hybrid system. (want the POW, but low for less power consumption)

Have said for years the blockchain should be tiered so the big transactions are separate from the small ones... so combining POS and POW will do the trick nicely I think.

Not really going to be using all leading Zeros like for Bitcoin though, for this one I'm going to use various words instead, and the blockchain will be split/joined depending on the word in the hash. (some more/less difficult - reward tiered)

Anyway, not trying to go off topic, or hijack the thread, just have hybrid blockchain on the brain, and the FPS for this was a reminder of my brain fart earlier today.

I had trouble getting that 31 when the monitor refresh rate was over 140mhz, so make sure your monitor is set at 60mhz if you want to score higher.

Uff, I didn't check the thread for quite a while - thanks so much for trying out my game!!! Impressive scores you have there.

You can soon play ORBITER on the go, I have sent it over to Google to list it in the Google App Store (one of the reasons I didn't check back here - it's a lot of work)! And it has leaderboards (top 3 scores only, though, it's the first time I am programming such a functionatlity).

Please help me fix this
Concerning the different speeds: I am using VSync but tied the movement of the UFOs to delta time. What you are reporting should not happen. What exactly moves faster? Thanks for providing further information! Now I'm getting nervous, because I already turned it in to Google

Looks like the crown belongs to hendron... for now

The UFOs appear to move the same speed regardless, but the satellite definitely orbits faster on higher refresh rates.

Hi hendron,

thanks for your reply. I've updated the HTML5 version on itch.io with a fix. Now the UFOs and the satellite should move at the same speed regardless of the refresh rate. Now it's fair competition for the whole forum again

A feedback, if the fix works for you, would be greately appreciated. Thanks for making me aware of the issue.

Faster than the 60mhz setting I had but seems easier to get to 31, so slower than my 144mhz setting.

Seems to be the same speed on both settings now, so yes it works and seems like somewhere in between, so nice fix.

No one is going to have a chance at that 64 now though IMO, but the new leader boards will be starting fresh anyway, so looking forward to it.

I should have been on 60mhz anyway for less power consumption, so glad this game's thread pointed that out... THANKS

Much faster than the old 60hz. Makes the start of the game go by faster, but I had a hard time getting past 40.

Must practice before the leaderboards are implemented. The crown is mine, dammit.

Yes, I adjusted the speed increase and start speed based on player feedback. Looks like the thread got the feeling for the base version right, because both adjustments were noticed. This is the current high score (I know of) for the new version, set by a friend in the Android test branch.

I have had some complaints by players that the leaderboards are insane

I am thinking of wiping them every 2 weeks together with the highscore and if you are in the top 3 at that time, you will get an ORBITER Veteran level +1/+2/+3/+4 depending on your place or something. What do you guys think of that?

Well... it's what a leaderboard is. In every game ever, the top spots are insane crazy runs that only a very small fraction of the playerbase has a chance of beating. I think wiping them would be a mistake. That guy who got a 75 (...eff that guy...) deserves to be on top for as long as his record remains unbroken.

I would suggest that you simply split it into two boards. An All-Time Best, and a Weekly Best.

And if I may suggest a new feature... the ability to select the starting level, according to your past achievements. Let's say I reach a score of 36, then I would get the option to start from 30. If I reach 52, then I can start from 50.. etc. Dunno... maybe? I rarely play more than one game at a time because starting over at a score of 1 when the game only becomes challenging at 30 feels like a lot of pointless tapping on my screen. Maybe reset it weekly so that people who get insanely lucky scores can't keep on pushing their score into the stratosphere?

I agree with n00bstar about not wiping the leaderboards. Instead I'd suggest showing more than just the top 3 spots, as well as showing the player's place on the board as long as they're in the top, say, 100 or so spots.

Thanks for your feedback, I will take it into consideration. Still thinking about ways how to motivate players for a longer term and I think Veteran Levels might be a good idea. Lots of people just give up seing the leaderboards or thinking they can't push their personal highscore higher than X. The option to start based on the personal best might be possible, I will look into that. Besides: they are no real leaderboards. I wanted to try to implement something and it worked, but w/o names and stuff I either ditch it in favor of the Veteran Levels or expand it to X players.

Ok, here's how it's planned:

Your all time high will be saved. The leaderboard all time high will be saved. After 1 week the leaderboard and your current highscore gets wiped and you gain a veteran level based on your place on the leaderboard. The veteran level allows you to skip certain levels up to a maximum of 30 (or so) on your new hunt for the leaderboard place. I will implement this in an alpha build next week and see how the feedback is.

Wiping the scores on a single leader board is a huge mistake in my opinion.

Some people play games just to compete with scores on leader boards and investing the time to get to the first position, only to have it erased is a definite turn off.

Sure, saving your all time high is good, but if others do not see it then it doesn't really have the same significance as opposed to having the world see it on a leader board.

Some golden age arcade games have world records that were set in the early 1980's that still have not been beaten.

Of course, those scores were recorded manually by arcade owners, then validated by Twin Galaxies, but the TG database today is up to date and includes the old scores.

Sure, this is not a golden age arcade game , just a casual game for smart phones, but the competitiveness of leader boards is the same.

My suggestion is this.... have more than one leader board, like some modern casino sites and other popular games do.

So, there is ....

1) An all-time-high leader board (100 or how ever many slots you want but at least 50+ is recommended) .

2) Monthly leader board

3) Weekly

4) Daily

You could get that down to just two if you want, like an all time high and a weekly for simplicity.

Multiple boards would not only give someone a chance to compete with the insane all time highs, but new comers to the game would also have a chance of at least getting their score on a leader board that is refreshed.

That way, you could appeal to casual players who like to compete, as well as the serious players who want to maintain an all time high position for a legacy score.

Sure, that assumes the game will have people playing in months or years to come, but simple games that are addictive can grow into something big over time (like angry birds), so you never know.

This doesn't really matter though if your leader boards are not going to include 'handle' (user names), and I do not see the point of a leader board without one because a player cannot prove to their friends that the score was actually their score.

With that said... I also recommend including the player names (even if only 3 initials) to your leader boards.

EDIT
Thanks again for this thread.

Talking about the leader boards made me go and check my world records, which I have not checked in over a year, and I found that my 21 world records are now down to only 16. (this will not do)

Looks like I have my work cut out for me to reclaim my position on some game titles, especially my favorite that I used to have 3 records on separate tracks for that game title.

At least I got beaten out by a celebrity world class gamer John P McAllister (Redelf) who has 153 world records, so definitely not a scrub, but getting knocked to 2nd place still hurts.

That track (leader board for specific rule set) has only eight scores with the oldest being set in 2015 when it began, because the first high scores were so high and usually people only submit a score that can beat the existing 1st place rather than submitting scores for adjudication that are not world records, but some people submit scores for 2nd 3rd etc on other tracks, just depends on the game and the player. (Donkey Kong tracks get lots of less than first place submissions)

Anyway, in the world of competitive gaming, wiping a leader board is about as popular as crucifying Jesus.

Thank you for your input. Honestly I've heard "I hate the idea", "I love the idea" and everything inbetween.

I see the appeal of a classic leaderboard (and it's a classic staple of gaming for a reason), but I think I want to try another take on it. ORBITER is a small project that allows me to do so.

To encourage players to stick to the game I would like to introduce the veteran level, which is a long term goal. Get it up as high as you can and brag with your friends about it. Maybe even have a leaderboard for it. Climbing the leaderboard is the short term goal. Play as good as you can during the week to gain more veteran points. And with gaining the veteran points you have a sense of improvement, since they allow you to skip certain levels like n00bstar suggested.

Am I sure this will be fun and work? Not at all. I am quite nervous honestly regarding the negative receptions. As I've said I will implement the functionality over the next week and roll it out in a Google Play test (if you want to participate, feel free to write me a message).

And if you all hate it, I will just release ORBITER classic alongside ORBITER Veteran Edition

EDIT

This shows that you have a completely different and passionate relationship towards leaderboards. I would use it to implement something similar to Paragorn, Prestige or Infamy levels in "modern" gaming and then heartlessly wipe them as they are a tool to calculate the level. You associate world records with them.

I see no point in a veteran badge honestly. Maybe it's just me. But once I get the badge. What's next? What's there to keep me playing? What does the badge give me? Bragging rights? Bah! It's just a matter of time before everybody gets a lucky on a good RNG run and gets the veteran badge. Then what do I play for? Super Veteran badge? Then Mega Super Veteran? Super Mega? MEGA MEGA MEGA DOUBLE NINJA SPACESHIP DELUXE BIKINI BADGE? Who cares about grinding for badges?

This is a problem with "modern" gaming. It ain't as much a recognition of your skills as much as it is a testament of how much time you wasted on a game. You can log into any game and see a moron with a fully decked out character with all the stupid cosmetic improvements and the super rare exotic gear... what does it tell you about that person? Is he good? Or does has he just given up on going outside and spent all his time in the game?

It depends on what you're shooting for I guess. If you just want to keep people in the game for no better reason than cheap pavlovian stimuli... then, yknow, it's your game so you do you.

But just look at how this thread fired up because of the score competition. It's what keeps us playing. We're trying to be the top dog. If you wipe me from the leaderboard, I'm just gonna stop caring. I think an all-time board, coupled with a periodic board is the best way to go.

Dunno why high score tables are so frowned upon these days.... every freaking sport is based around a high score table when you think about it. If hockey teams were just playing to get achievements and badges, there would be no point to it anymore even though the basics of the game would be the exact same.

This. Orbiter is a great game. It's also very simple, and I totally believe the competition is what will keep players coming back despite the simplicity. I would actually consider it to be a core part of the gameplay. But it could be that I'm becoming an old fart, lol.

Either way, best of luck with the release -- I hope it does well.

Thanks for your kind words!

Well, I am looking for a way to keep people encouraged. I did not mean to and did not start a fundamental discussion about what is better, because it can't be answered. Some people may come back for the grind for a badge, some people may come back for the leaderboards - I believe to let people enjoy things, can see both sides and want them to have fun with my little game.

With that being said, I will try to combine both worlds. Weekly wiped leaderboards to give new players a chance, like Conjured Entertainment suggested, combined with a badge level and all time leaderboards for the crazy highscores.

I did get some feedback that there were performance issues with switching on delta time for the mobile build as well. I rolled out a small fix today and have some performance adjustments ready for the next update, which will introduce the feature to name your pilot / give initials.
