To make good model is just half way to complete your character. Still there is texture to make which is as dificult as modeling. Good texture can make average model good while bad one can make good model bad...
While making my own textures I learned few simple tricks I want to share with you. They are simple but efective.
To make realistic looking cloth can be very difficult. Thease tricks can make it much easier for you.
This tutorial is for Phothoshop but might be possible in other similar apps too.

1sth step:
Create new file with white background. Make width twice of height (512/256 for example)
Use Brush tool to make black lines around.

2nd step:
Use Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur..
Set radius depending to texture size to get efect like this:

3th step:
Use Filter>Blur>Motion Blur..
Set angle cca. 70 and apropirate distance

4th step:
Use Filter>Stilize>Emboss..
Set angle cca 140 and apropirate height and amount

5th step:
Resize texture to square Image>Image Size.. (set resample box on while constrain proportions off)

6th step:
Create new layer ower your texture and fill (Paint Bucket Tool) it with color while having Opacity set to cca. 33%

Of course you can create diferent paterns depending on basic drawing, angle and amount of blur and emboss.

Man, This is great, I've tried it out in PhotoImpression, and it works great (instructions are relatively the same too). This will help me out quite a bit (especially with my other models texture).

Thank you Arras!

Cheers,
Preston

[Edit] Now if you could crank out a decent tutorial for steel, skin, rock, grass, and decent sky sphere textures, I'd be fine!

Agreed, metals are a pain in the ass for myself and I'd love to see a tutorial for them as good as this one. Great work, it's like you said: Simple but effective.

steel is pretty easy for a simplistic effect.

pick 2 grey shades. add noise . motion blur the image for a very simplistic brushed steel effect.

Great.. Yet simple. If you liked this one check out the book "2D Artwork and 3D Modeling for Game Artist", by David Franson, from Premier Press. ***** This book has very simple but powerful tutorials for Photoshop. There is a chapter for organic and inorganic textures. Brick, Rock, Stone, Steel are some of the inoragnic textures covered. This book is a must have for game artist.

Thanks, hope you will find good use of that in your work

GravityWell>>> sounds good to me but my acces to foreign literature is limited since they cost many times more than comparrable books here (if there is existing something to compare of course). I have to consider well if to spend money I had to work for, for several days to book (great may be) or to pay rent for my flat

I've made cloth a few times before, but I always forget how I did it. This sounds similar I think. Cool to know what I did!
