Anyone using GameSpace by Caligari?
- Any problems?
- Other programs like it (cheaper)?
- Advantage/Disadvantage?
Thanks!
Warm regards,

like all cheap modlers it crashes more than it should so save alot.

it can't make movies like truespace.

no nurbs.

Quote: "Other programs like it (cheaper)?"

well i like animation master but its nurbs ONLY easy to use

and has a very good render.

Quote: "- Advantage/Disadvantage?"

advantage has good export/import options

has a lot of good plugins.

easy to animate any thing.

very good render.

it handles the .x format better than most other modlers

bad things.
it likes to crash when you make a .md3 so you may have to
do it more than once.

like always the camera controls suck.

"very good render"

Dont you mean EXTREMELY bad render engine? Truespace/gamespace doesnt even have a bucket render and it slow as hell. Results are poor and it doesnt having anything recent in it. A simple skylight can take hours and hours to render.

with Gamespace:
i could render to a file in a couple of minutes with 5 lights
and bump maps and 10k+ polygons.

truespace is the slower render i dont know why.

Personally I'd go with Truespace5.2 over GameSpace. Since GameSpace is new, it's gonna have some processing to go through, yet TS5.2 is already pretty solid.(I think they're up to TS6.6 now)

Calgari products are like the middle man modelers. You do get a lot of bang for your buck, but they're not as strong as Maya,Max,Lightwave, softimage, etc.

Personally, I like TS5.2 because it's fast, flexible interface, and easy once you get the hang of things.

I personally havn't tried 6.6, but having to buy the $200 game pak plus $319 TS6.6(The price is low cause it's upgrade pricing) is the only real good way to get your models into DBP. That's just a joke.
I might as well save for Lightwave which is still a good $750, but is more worth my time.

Go with TS5.2 if you have to go with any TS product.
All Calgari products are pretty good in my opionion, but not necessarily suited for game development.

I agree, 5.x is better than 6.6

I used truespace for years and I know its weaknesses. There are alot of them

The people at caligari try hard but they just dont have some of the basics in. Things like super stable mesh tools. I remember so many times when verts would suddenly unweld themselfs all across my models in truespace. Not being able to view the triangles/subdivisions its using on 4point (and higher) polys is a pain too. At least not without a triangulation added (permanent). The undo even sucks. So many times undos just would work. You learn to stop using them but its really annoying. Saving like 15 copies of a scene constantly

Overall the whole program is picky about things. Would always take splines for lofts. Sometimes simple boleen operations crash or get reversed. (IE Union does subtraction instead) The material editor was decent.

Really to be truthfull very few people if anyone around here will use there modelling package commercially so educational copies are really the way to go.

"with Gamespace:

With Brazil i can render that soo many times faster. Things like raytraced reflections don't even noticably slow things down. Not in truespace/gamespace though. Add raytracing to a scene with nothing reflective and it makes your render take forever. Poor image sampling quality and options. No decent GI, no sub surface scattering, Area lights are VERY slow. The list goes on and on.

Wow, long post from me

Can't agree with you any more Froggermon. This is the one thing that bothers me. I mean you learn to work your way around the glitches, but it is pretty annoying.
-----------
For example.

If you selected four equidistant parallel sides of an 8 sided cylinder, and then pulled them together, this would work.

BUT, if you select the 4 sides, accidently select a 5th side, and use undo. Well, then you have to reselect them all over again.
-----------

Other than the undo problems, the only other real bug that bothers me, is sometimes vert's will pop at weird places, and the welding doesn't work to well.

Don't get me wrong, TS5.2 is good. If you have the money buy it, but there are other freeware tools that could get the job done.

Personally thinking of moving to Lightwave once I get the $$$.

Truespace5(5.2)

Interface:5/5 Once you get use to it, it can become a very good friend.
Rendering:3/5 Average rendering, can't say I've used too many high quality 3D packages.(3ds max, lightwave, maya, etc.)It gets the job done though.
Work efficiency:4/5 Other than the bugs mentioned, it gets the job done nicely and done fast.
Animation:4/5 Better than any freeware you'll find, and the IK is really nice and easy.(pain to get into DBP though)
Cinematic: Have never done any, yet from what I've seen it does the job well if you have the patience.(4/5)

Overall:4/5 For it's price, it's a good buy. It runs with DBP, and has a nice community.

@MasterChief

Try the trial versions of some of calgari's products. I guareentee you'll want to kill the interface after working with it for 5 minutes, but it's designed for a reason.
Read plenty of reviews before choosing a 3D package, so you know what will fit your needs.

Finally, consider support,if it will benefit you later(Using the pro tools for example), and how much patience(perfectionist?) you have.

Try this modeler, it's in beta right now and it's free.

MarbelClay

It can be found here http://member.nifty.ne.jp/escargot

It's very professional looking and a lot less buggy than GameSpace is being described in this thread.
