Hello everybody,

I've haven't been coding with AGK:S for a few years and want to get back into it. My idea is to make a simple retro FPS like wolfenstein/Doom. In the past I tried to make 3D placement editors but those project were always very huge and I do not wish do that anymore.

How would you approach the creation of 3D levels and what tools are being used nowadays?

All the input is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Have a look into maze backtracking algorithms then can convert the results into 3D.

Search "maze" on here, you will find that algorithm.

After all doom and such like is a glorified maze, been modified after the algorithm with doors / other openings / secret walls, widening spaces with unwanted walls etc

Hope that helps to get you at least started.

Can't wait to see what you come up with

Thanks Aidan!

I will take a look at the maze algorithms, although I'd like to build it up from completely premade objects and such.

Awesome, in built levels are the best.doing it that way, you can place your different objects what ever value you have in the hard coded area.

Nice find

Good luck

Depends on the game/level.
Stuff like mazes can even be done with a simple .txt file.

Years ago, I created a 3D level editor in Blitz3D to play around with a dungeon crawler idea.
The walls, columns, ceilings, floors and doors are just cubes with some textures I found online to test, so nothing fancy there...
Here's a video of some pre-alpha stuff. I didn't pursue it any further because Blitz3D was already too old at that point.
This is not fullscreen as Blitz3D doesn't run in Exclusive FS mode on Win10 w/o issues, or at all.

Wow, thanks for all the replies!!

In the past I've used a program called Mapscape, a program similar to Valve's editor. I'm not sure if that program is still viable. Does anyone still use it? Are there similar programs?

There's a Mapscape made with Darkbasic, but it was discontinued about 10 years ago.

An idea has come to my head for when I can get a laptop for this type of thing, will come in handy, I'm sure dungeons and dragon/doom/Wolfenstein/role play adventure games are on some of our wish list to create, this will bring the foundation of the map, together with slopes / stairs to higher stories of a building / cave

Cheers for the inspirational idea

Ummm let me have a think

To bad mapscape is discontinued. Anyone still use it?

Anyone has experience in using models with child objects as maps? What editors would be best for that?

I found one with great potential. It appears I already own it, but I forgot!

It's called Crocotile 3D and is aimed at retro games!
