I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum but it doesn;t matter, you all would probably get a kick out of this no matter where it's posted.

I'm relitively new to DB and actualy relitively new to coding as a whole (still no excuse for the new low in thought processes I reached today)

I was very excited today, I was planning on making my first "final" (the .exe with all the media) out ofthe longest program (and my still ongoing work) of about 210 lines of code (aprox 350 commands). Little did I know what was in store for me:

I polished everything so I knew it would work and would work flawlessly and proceded to tell my comp to make the final (I use DARKedit which is important because it doesn't let you know what it's doing). Anyways, I clicked my mouse and my computer started to think.....and think.....and think. After about one and a half minutes of staring at my computer while it did whatever it was doing I started to get worried. After another minute I got an error message telling me something about not being able to write to C:, at that point I got really worried but there wasn't much I could do at that point. I waited another minute. Finaly my computer finished and I went to chack out my brand spanking new final. Heh, my brand spanking new final was 338MB, I just about had a stroke. I found out later the reason, that was that since my DB file was in the DB program files whatever was supposed to make the final took ALL OF DB CLASSIS and tried to make an exe out of it But at the time While I was having my stroke (the final didn't even work, but you could probably guess that) I figured I'd restart my comp and try again, so I closed DARKedit and saved (what I thought was) my program, actualy I saved a little 4 line code snippet IN PLACE of my beloved program. Restarting didn't help either so I was left with no source code, and a 338MB broken EXE......please don't try this at home people, it will only make you cry.

Anyways, (this is the only time you will EVER hear me praise Microsoft over anything) SYSTEM RESTORE R0X0RZ!

In the end I did get my source back and I did finaly get my .exe, but it sure was hell getting to this point

Yeah that system restore is pretty handy but it didnt help when my hard drive got ate up by a viris. I only had my brand new alienware for 1 week before a virus destroyed my hard drive the stupid thing is that I had the opportunity to buy some antivirus software but I thought "hey it will never happen to me" then it did. Oh well alienware sent me a new hardrive and a tech guy to fix my comp, works like a dream now.

@Sleet; you do know that DarkEDIT makes backups of your source code on compile, don't you?

it has exactly the same file name, except the extension is .bak and you just open it in notepad and all your source code is there...

Also, if it's your first program, i can see why you didn't make back-ups... Let this be a lesson... ALWAYS back-up your work... It's the worst feeling when you lose it ALL and can't get it back ( I personally don't use System Restore, as to be able to save some space on my HDD )

Oh well, at least you got the code back...

Happy New Year to you

yeah, I'll keep that it mind the next time i'm exporting.

major payn: When A virus hits that takes advantage of system restore, THE FIRST THING TO DO, even before running a virus scan, is disabling the restore. If you don't do that, it will infest every date on the computer.

it is knowledge from experience.

Check out my backup thread, you don't even have to remember, it does it for you, and it only uses WinZip utilities and Task Scheduler...

Yeah but I didnt even notice my computer was infected until it was to late. One day I came home from school and turned on my computer and was greeted with a lovely black screen notifying me that my hard drive just died. needless to say I was really freakin pissed off

I did that too. I found out that it is going out and compiling every last piece of media in the directory and all sub directories. I put it in a new folder in "myproj\firstgame" and it now compiles to about 8megs and does it in six seconds.
