I have been making practice models for a possible game and I can'y decide on how I should do a character frozen in ice, metal or stone. Textures would be the easiest way out but I'm trying to achieve something special. How would 100% transparent models or jutting out ice be done in 3dsmax? Suggestions would be nice .

I don't get mad, I get stabby.

Yup, it's a forum, not a chatroom
Anyways, the best method would be to first model your ice object. In 3dsMax you could just make a cube with several width and height segments, then convert it to an editable mesh and play with the verts until it seems natural enough. Then plop your character in and make sure he's the correct scale and in the correct position, and export the character and ice seperatly. You can then load both into DBP and set the alpha of the ice until it seems transparent enough

doing good looking Ice is a bit tricky But if you just want to be simple about it a transaprent ice shape + environment map would work pretty well.

you'll have to make the transparency in the texture... and believe me it'll look better as part of the Targa than part of the model itself.

you might however want to setup the Specular to compliment the shine that ice would have, perhaps a pale blue and set both the Ambient and Diffuse colours lower so it stands out and doesn't glow as brightly. (thats best left to the texture)

it shouldnt matter with set alpha commands. Of course if you do it with the texture you can make the transparency splottchy.
