I have a ten year old brother with a birthday coming up and he wants to make games like me. Unlike me, however, he does not program. does anyone know how good of a product the 3d game maker realy is?

Much less power than DB, click and drop, you cant create anything more than an FPS. You cant have much of a story either, pretty much just compile the levels and play it going around shooting the enemies created.

They give you preset guns, preset enemies and all that stuff. I dont think you can alter it very much at all.

I read somewhere that it can make more then FPS like driving games and the likes but nothing like RPG's or anything like that its sopost to come with over 500 something images and lots of enemies, guns, cars ect...so in other words driving/fps is probably about it.

I have 3d GameMaker for my 13 & 9yr old. They too get bored easily and so they did with 3d GM after about 1 hr. The technology is great but the gameplay & lack of AI is dull. The graphics are a bit 1998.
You can make several types of games but all see to have something lacking. The best parts are changing the Aliens face textures with scanned family photo's & changing the world maps.
It is a very nice package but just nice, is not good enough for a 13 year old.
I would suggest you get a trial copy.

I guess you could look at it from this point of view...

It's cheaper than a PS2 or XBox game, even if your little brother doesn't like it you aren't out as much as you could be.

Look I have to admit it, I think the lack of a trial stinks too. I bought it when the exchange rate was against me but I thought my kids would love it & it bugs me that my copy is just collecting dust.
I'm happy to give it to a good home. Where do you want it posted?

there is one.
Charles River Media has it in a Multiplayer Game Programming book.

Maybe http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1584502150/ref=pd_sim_books_2/002-5051178-3028017?v=glance&s=books
Well I'm sure it's that title but unsure about that version. Not listed on Amazon but the back cover and an inside page should detail a tutorial on using the trial for 3d Game Maker.

Maybe try the RPG Tool Kit. (http://www.rpgtoolkit.com). IT is GREAT for a little 32-bit top-down or isometric game maker. Not much programming is needed. (controls, menu, battle, ect. are premade). It is a level editor, character editor, item editor, enemy editor, & more! Also it is free! Try it. I use it a lot. Screenies:

There's also RPG Maker 2000(RM2K), or RPG Maker 2003(RM2K3) but that one's not in english. Well... it is in english it's just not legally in english. It's like the RPG toolkit but I've always liked it better for many reasons. One being I always found it a lot simpler to use.

I was just gonna mention RPGMaker! - Just thinking how much the boy is into Pokemon on his - He'd probably like that too. There's probably a shoot-em-up maker out there too.

I hesitate to mention, because it was where I came from, but if you want an easy to program platform of overhead sprite based game maker you can get GameMaker from http://www.gamemaker.nl/

It is not bad and it has a simplified programming concept as well as a basic scripting language.

I am not sure if this is off your topic but thought I would throw it out for you.

www.gamedev.net has a scrolling game toolkit on download.com... also www.playerworlds.com download the server and client... probably not fit for a 10 year old, but if you've ever played Mirage, well that's its engine and map editor, and yes you can make another RPG without coding it.

Although I found the map editor system tough (never learned how to scroll)

Easiest thing I ever used was RPGMaker, just used it to make something for ED that I could go by. Kinda like a playable story

http://www.fileplanet.com/files/80000/80871.shtml

after testing, I found this requires a 3D card.
My desktop does not have one and does not like the demo...
my lap top liked it, Also, I agree with Rob K on the review on this.
Gamespy gave it a glowing review for ease of use, but slams it on lack of advanced features. I would say its OK for a target audience of age 8 or for grand parents (because they could understand it and would buy it for 15 year olds that would hate it)
