I have and know 3ds Max, is there any reason to buy Milkshape? Does Milkshape do anything that 3ds Max does not?
Thanks!

Nope, I can't think of anything that Max can't do better. And besides you already know 3ds Max. I think Milkshape has more import and export formats though thats not all that useful. However, I don't know much about 3ds Max (I only have gmax), though by the price tag... Anyway, go with 3ds max (if its a legal version that is...).

Uh...this is a very silly question. Milkshape is a 20$ program. Max costs about 300 to 1000$ depending on the seller. Max is industry quality, and if you don't know the difference in power between max and Milkshape then maybe you shouldn't be using max...it's designed to do everything.

This IS a valid question QuothTheRaven,
I never used a boned character in DBpro and was asking if Milkshape bones might work better (As I have never used Milkshape). Also I was looking at CharacterFX and wanted to know if that worked better with Milkshape than 3ds MAX.

I was not asking what program was better!
I know how to use Max, if you took time to read the question maybe your answer would have been more intelligent. What a jerk.

Hmm, I'm on QuothTheRaven's side. If you spend just a little bit more time on wording the question you might get some better answers! It certaintly sounds like you where asking which was better!

If you have 3ds max why consider milkshape? Perhaps your worried about an illegal version of 3ds max? Why not download the demo of milkshape and try it yourself? Huh?

Seriously, what a JERK!

PS. I think this is my first 'pissed-off' post, how am I doing?

...max has an awesome IK system and solver, especially 5 and up. Never used CharacterFX. But since you never mentioned that in your original post, you were pretty much looking at comparing features, and I answered your question, max does everything.

Look my question was simple. Is there any reason to buy Milkshape? Why spend hours researching a new program when someone can polity answer a simple question, without any hassle, insults, or questioning my honesty.

I am done with this thread, and to the both of you if you can't help, then Sit Down and Shut Up.

I believe he was asking if milkshape does anything that Max doesnt. Milkshape seems to be more aimed at creating models for mods or existing games, this means that it supports many different imports/exports for the more commonly modded games. Also I find animating in Milkshape seems quite simple and straight forward. Saying that I've never actually used max, but from the GUI and screenshots it looks fairly overwhelming, and may even be considered overkill in some circumstances.

It's already been stated, really. Max costs about 2k for a new lisence, milkshape 20 bucks. Max has a hell of a lot more features, and will do everything you need to make 3d content for a game. Skeletal setup is fairly easy, IK solvers and bones allow you to create just about any bone structure you want for a skeletal asset.
I've bought both, oddly enough. Milkshape I use for it's great import and export tools.

I like CharacterFX,Milkshape and Unwrap3d as the cheapest combo around, when it comes to creating 3d animated characters. I use photoshop but paint shop pro would be a cheap alternative or even thegimp as a free solution.

vertex -> face editing... sorry but Milkshape is better than everything cept Maya at this, always has been always will be.

You have far more control and development over this aspect of the modelling, and why not; it is after all Milkshapes main modelling method.

3D Studio Max is too expensive and has features that you don't need if you're going to create low poly models for videogames created with DarkBASIC Professional. You're going to want to purchase MilkShape3D.

MilkShape3D will have all the features you need for low poly modelling. Your model development time will be alot faster with MilkShape3D only because you won't have to navigate all the menu's of 3D Studio Max. MilkShape3D has a highly intuitive and sleek gui.

I'm not shooting down your skills at 3D Studio Max, nor am I suggesting that you pirated it. 3D Studio Max is a really amazing package, but it's way too sophisticated to use for low poly modelling.

Don't let the price tag on MilkShape3D fool you. It's probably one of the most magnificient low poly packages I've used. I bought 3D Studio Max 4.x off of eBay for 50$ with all the manuals. It's a brillaint modelling package, but I've found that using MilkShape3D cuts my modelling development times in half.
