Installed all of the above tonight...and it's working!

If anyone has the slightest clue why I can only access MySQL with a blank user name and password, please tell. This is a simple, localhost implementation.

Because by default MySQL doesn't have a password set on the root account. Get yourself a good DB manager like the awesome (and free) DBDesigner 4 by FabForce. Or just read the docs about the mysqladmin command line utility that is included with every distribution.

Been using the command line utility. I can only use this anonymously, so when I try to add a user/password, it fails GRANTing permissions, because I don't have permission to GRANT anything. Doh!

I'll check out DBdesigner, thanks for the tip.
