Yeah, just compare the 98 and 2000 E3 demos for DNF, it's a completely new engine. Unfortunately they can't keep up with everyone else so they're just delaying it over and over. lmao.

'Wow. Most of Warcraft 3's models are under 500-700 polygons.'

That's because it both uses comic-style graphics, and it's an RTS... totally different thing

Warcraft 3 needs many, many models on-screen at the one time so they need to keep the poly count low. They also don't look nearly as good as Doom 3's.

I think we might be losing the big picture here.

Graphics aren't all about polycount and fancy effects.

It's about a coherent, visually attractive world. I would say that from the past year, the best looking game was The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It has neither the polycount, nor the supreme effects of many other games, but the whole game is a wonderful blend of stylised visuals and sleek animation. For me personally, that makes a much greater difference than "Is it two or three thousand polys and are the shadows stencil buffered or lightmapped?"

The reason Zelda:TWW was very clever though, is because it was really able to use its graphical style to further enjoyment of the game, as the cartoon characters were able to communicate emotion - something so key, so rarely seen. In a way, this is one of the elements which made Half-Life stand out. The characters were more than just placeholders.

I couldn't agree more.

Wind Waker dosen't look that good to me... seems like XIII did a far better job creating a cartoon/comic enviorment in 3d...

No, I've only seen screenshots. I'm sure it looks better in action, but I haven't seen XIII in action either, so I think it's even.

"No, I've only seen screenshots."

I figured. Most people who criticize the game have never actually played it. Its one of those games that have to be played in order to be appreciated.

I admit, I too was sceptical at first. But then I actually gave it a go and realized what a truly wonderful game it is. The graphics really are that good. I especially like how they did the fire, lava, and smoke effects. And they are consistent as well. Everything seemed in place and just right.

Have you played XIII? I'm assuming that's a no... I'll reserve any judgment, then .

No, but then again I never claimed that WindWaker did a better job than XIII.

All I'm saying is that WindWaker has some pretty sweet graphics.

Oh, and I have seen a vid of XIII in action, but since I haven't played it, I'll reserve my judgement on that paticular game as well.

The Wind Waker is actually one of those rare games that, unless you play you just can't judge it.
Sorry but the graphics in the screenshots look crap, but on a GC are just so chrisp and flow so well that quite frankly it deserved to be Game of the Year for the Gamecube.
This extends to the gameplay and design of the title.

XIII is a great FPS, and the comic style suits the game, but next to Beautiful Joe or The Wind Waker just doesn't cut it i'm afraid. Not graphically anyways. Gameplay wise it's pretty good
and i can say that because i've played both ^_^

i don't know why so many people disliked The Wind Waker actually, it was a bloody fantastic title that quite frankly flowed so well and just fit together.

HL2 doesn't, i'm sorry but some areas have high detail, others don't and it's that lack of an atmospheric blend between ALL of the characters and world area's that really totally spoils the illusion. Unlike Doom3 which is another game although doesn't have hyper real graphics fits together perfectly in it's own little world and build a very believeable and terror indusing world; just as Alien vs Predator did back on the Jaguar in '93

Wrong already, I don't think the screenshots look like crap and I never said that. Having played many a 'you have to play to believe' game also, I think I know what people are getting at, and I doubt I'd be very impressed... but, as I said, I'm not drawing any conclusions....

Well take it from someone who's has played Wind Waker and XIII, and someone who's not a graphical artist (me), the Wind Waker looked 500 times better. With XIII, I found it to be *too* cartoony--- a tiny bit hard to judge distances etc. Wind Waker seems as if they may have used thicker dark lines for the edges, and the expressions on the character's faces are great

The only real reason I'm so excited by HL2 is to get my hands on the mod tools. Can't wait to play around with the Source engine and the physics
