After recently upgrading my old 700Mhz to a nice new AthlonXP2500+ with 768Mb RAM and a 64Mb NVIDIA QUADRO NVS graphics card, I thought i'd compare the performance. Much Better I'm pleased to say!! However I noticed that while running DXDIAG the CPU was sitting at 100% usage. After checking I was up to date with all my drivers I investigated further. I also found that any DBPro program also runs at 100% cpu - even a one liner of 'WAIT KEY'.
At work the following day, I tried the save dxdiag test and found that my IBM Netvista there also ran at 100%. Both machines running Windows XP with all windows updates applied. I then checked a colleagues PC, also a Netvista but running Win2K and DX8.1 - Sure enough the CPU went high while dxdiag was checking itself, but then dropped back to 0-1% cpu. I then upgraded this machine to DX9.0b and run the test, this time it hovered at the 100% usage again.

Has anyone seen this or have any ideas?? Could you also test your dxdiag on your system with task manager running?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

DBPro Programs always hog your processor time unless you use SYNC OFF at the start of your code. Try it with Task manager open and you'll see a big difference. SYNC OFF is essential if you want your DBPro program to play nice while other software is running.

Darclyte,

I tried as you suggested, testing with the SYNC OFF command before the WAIT KEY. As you said, the CPU rate dropped dramatically!! Thanks for that.

However, can you or anyone else explain why dxdiag consumes a high cpu even at it's front screen? As I said before this only happens with DX9 and not DX8.1 - Is this still possibly a DX bug?

Regards,

Matt
