no one could hold a gun that size, let alone shoot it. I am pretty sure those fotos are faked. a .44 caliber is a decent size handgun but no where near the overall size of that gun, yet you say that gun is .50 caliber - doesn't make sense.

hm, i'm not convinced that's real. i've seen a 50 cal revolver and it was much smaller than that, here's a pic, http://firearms.smith-wesson.com/store/index.php3?cat=293531&sw_activeTab=1

do you know who makes it? it looks much larger than necessary, even for a .50 caliber. where did you find the pictures?

edit: actually, i and the people who were skeptical were right, it is fake, http://www.securityarms.com/20010315/galleryfiles/1700/1756.htm

Great big ugly thing, and so is the gun

As for the re-coil, if you could fire a gun like that say in Texas, the re-coil would send you to California

Im confused here...

does any one know the difference in size between a .50 cal Desert Eagle and a .50 cal Barrettm82 Rifle (or .50 machine gun)?

well, the size of what are you talking about, the diameter of the bullet, the length of the bullet, the length of the gun? a desert eagle is a handgun, and as such is much shorter than any rifle or machine gun. if you are talking about bullet diameter, it is the same, the barret M82 fires a .50 cal BMG, which is a much longer bullet than the .50 that a DEagle fires, and is shoulder stopped, is a lot heavier, and i believe has a much larger charge (amount of gunpowder in the cartridge).

NightGiant nailed it. The Browning .50 cal round is significant;y longer than the .50 cal pistol round. I used to have a .50 web site devoted to .50 anti-material rifles and (snicker) pistols. Maadi Griffin used sell plans to make single shot rifles, carbines, and pistols. Now, that's a whole lotta whoop ass in one bullet.

Even those monsters were not as big as that fake gun.

Yeah they could. It's not like handguns are heavy, one twice the size with twice as heavy amunition would still be carryable, although aiming and recoil would be a frikkin nightmare.

Of course, there are anti-material rifles based on 20mm auto-cannon rounds. Yes, these are man portable sniper systems with 'bullets' as long as your hand that dwarf even .50 cal BMG rounds.

You're all wrong its a real gun for real people who really want to shoot themselves in the foot.

If anyone can come up with a good reason for me using all that bold I'll give them a shiny bad full of invislible dollars.

Lol, with that recoil, once you shood your leg, the recoil will spring the gun backwards. You will be standing there with a huge hole in your head wondering what happened.

Nah the recoil would send you about 10-15 feet backwards if aiming down 5-10 feet in the air and if aiming up 3-7 feet into the ground...

Perhaps a big bore version of the fake gun could be used to fire 2.75 inch flechette rockets, if they made a 275 cal 'short' round

the crossbow we owned only shot bolts. arrows splinter when fired due to the power sometimes and thats why you need a heavier arrow like shaft usually referred to as a bolt

I think we came to the conclusion that the recoil would propell you 10 feet.

A bolt is more like a chunky dart than an arrow, shorter and heavier - the Romans used a massive crossbow type weapon called a Ballista, which fired 8" bolts that could puncture armour. I suppose you could call one of those short arrows a bolt because it's too short to be called an arrow, but a propper crossbow bolt is a much more dangerous projectile.

As a reality check, the recoil would not throw you back several meters. It would surely foil your aim for a second shot. But, even .50 BMG has managable recoil in single shot mode. My favorite big gun picture shows a petite woman firing a Maadi Griffin single shot .50 BMG pistol.

Now, if you had a sloppy grip on the gun, the gun might go 3 meters. [Or until your skull stopped it.]

also, the recoil would send your arm or hand upwards in an arc. when you fire a handgun, it does not push straight back like a rifle, but rather in an upward arc due to the construction of your hand, elbow and shoulder. there is a video, however, of a man firing a rather large caliber bullet (i forget what caliber, but they called it the T-Rex) and he is literally knocked on his ass, lol.

oh, funny story, my sister once fired a handheld crossbow at a target in front of a door, well, the bolt hit the door instead of the target, went through the door, the fins caught on the door, came flying off the bolt and hit my mother who was standing behind us. she wasn't hurt though so it's funny, heh. i also fired a pencil out of the same one and it just shattered, lol.
