Anyone know what this DLL is used for?

Here's why I ask...

I got home from work today and booted up my computer. Everthing was normal at first, Graphics card detect, showed the dell logo, and then...it froze for about ten seconds. After which I got the screen that asks if you want to start windows in safe mode or run it normally or whatever...that scared me. So I tried running with the "Last known working configuration" obviously, and it showed "Windows XP Home" loading screen. It loaded for about five minutes. Nothing happened. Turned off the compy, booted it up to the same screen. Tried safe mode. Same thing. Turned it off AGAIN, turned it back on, and it worked...only it was in safe mode. Then, try as I may, I couldn't get it OUT of safe mode. I ended up having to run system restore (back to last Thursday). When I booted up Windows, it said something about it couldn't read "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nvcpl.dll".

Any ideas?

It's an NVidia Display Properties Extension. It's not a system DLL.

did anything abnormal happen with the machine prior to shutting it down before the problem started? Did you install anything the night before, etc ?

nvidia control panel library ... and the hang happened becuase the prefetch became damaged. this happens quite often without a proper bootdown.

... as do most Windows problems where people bitch that it's a crappy OS, and yadda yadda yadda when it's really because they download 15 billion spyware apps off of KaZaa and turn off the system without shutting down properly.

BTW I'm not saying the original poster did this, it's just my midnight rant.
