Hi all, just today Ive started getting popups in areas where I never used to, such as on this site and on google. This is very odd and is slightly worrying. Could it be down to spyware or something Ive got without noticing? Any help would be great thanks

Yes, it's spyware on your machine... download and update Spybot: Search and Destroy, immunize your machine, and destroy everything it detects .

I'd bet that it was spyware.

I don't think cookies has anything to do with popups. Popup software is installed on your comp, and no amount of cleaning up the cache or cookies will stop it.

I have noticed that one of the software popups is for spyware popup killers...I wonder if they're the ones infecting us?

Wouldn't surprise me ...eyes watching from everywhere..

You might have a bunch of Trojan Horses on your computer. I had a friend that had tons of search sites and pop-ups coming up whenever he browsed the internet. I ran a virus scan on his ocmputer and it removed all of them.

Here is a link to two useful online security checks that can benchmark your computer's security, and scan for the viruses your computer has:

Amazingly enough, the next Windows XP update (update 2) will include a pop-up blocker built into IE Can't wait to see what happens to all those popup advertisers!

Getting Spybot tonite- already got Google toolbar downloaded, but I havent installed it yet. Funny that symantec is the security login used by the college computers (im on one now). I have run a virus scan and it turned up nothing (but I cant remember if it was before or after they started. Also mote - I have a program called windows washer, if youve heard of it, that cleans your system and stops files being recovered after deletion. Well, I ran a wash after these popups began and it said that the recycle bins on all my partitions were corrupt. Hmmm.

if you are running XP, there's a nasty popup pgm which if you get on your box, it will keep coming up even if your not using your web browser!

If you go in your computer's settings and un-check the Remote Adminstration (something like that). These popups will stop!

I have no idea if this is your problem (it couldn't hurt to try and if you uncheck it, you won't have to worry about the popup I mentioned again.

I strongly recommend using alternative browser software for better security. - IE is so common and therefor commonly exploited.

I use Avant Browser which has built in pop up blocking and some nice navigation features and makes good use of the middle mouse button. It uses IE .dll's so is fully compatable, although slightly less secure as a result.

http://www.avantbrowser.com/

More serious though is email, using Outlook Express is just begging for somebody to send you a virus. I am still looking for my ideal alternative so I have nothing to recommend here yet.

You know someone mentioned download dot com and I find this really ironic...

Today I was searching for a WAV-MP3 encoder. Two out of the three things I d/l'd didn't work, not to mention ALL THREE INCLUDED ADWARE. They didn't say that on the product description, or the installation. It was only after I was done and looked in the start menu that I saw "WAV-MP3 (Adware Edition)". I went back to their site, and on their main page they advertise Spybot and Ad-aware.

It's so amusing.

Ok people, I got and installed spybot 1.2 from download.com, it found a load of spyware files/registry things, so I got rid of them. Came back online, lo and behold, same stuff. Does anyone get a popup if they go on google.com, then click on image? Another sort of search engine popup?

Plus when I came on this site I got a new one that I hadnt seen before.

[edit] when i just posted this message I got the k-lite one again, so it mustnt have work all that good. This is starting to annoy me, especially since this system has just been set up new.

Like I said, run a full system virus scan. You have viruses/trojan horses/worms on your computer.

What Virus Scanner are you using, and how recent are your virus definitions? If you're using a program like McAfee Virus Scan 95, then you're toast.

You might want to check your home page, sites can change those. If you don't know how to check it:

1. Open internet explorer.
2. Go to Tools | Internet Options.
3. In the "Home page section" just below the tabs, make sure the page is a familiar one. Personally, I prefer about:blank.

Just a suggestion.
