Finally. I made my first 3D Model . I made it in Anim8or (http://www.anim8or.com/). Any C&C is welcome.

I did all of the texturing in Anim8or and rendering. It took 2 minutes to render. I do not know the poly count but it tells me this: Points-2479, Edges-14934, Faces-7528, Memory-1.15MB.

your poly count is how many faces you have.

There is some rules on the poly counts when it comes to the real time enviroment. If I'm making the main character of the game, I usually use 1500- 2000 polygons in it. Enemys and other characters are somewhere 1000-1500 polygons and for enviroment 10- 20 000 polygons. But these amounts are adjustet for these days computers..

If you are planning to make the game for older computer, then you have to explore of what the poly count should be.

It's good start to think first what kind of hardware your game would need to play smoothly. What is the maximum poly count on the screen? Is there ten different characters jumping on the screen + highly detailed enviroment, or is there only two characters on the screen at the same time?

When you know these, you can then count the polycount for the main character, enemies and for the enviroment so you won't have situation where the frame rate gets for 2 per second even if there is lot of things happenig on the screen and even the most powerful machine on the earth couldn't manage that.

Sorry if you don't understand the text but english is not my mother language..

I am making the game for a computer with these specs (or higher):

>>PentiumIII 500Mhz

>>128MB RAM

>>16MB Graphics Card with DirectX 8.1 support

>>Supports 3D Acceleration

>>56K Internet Connection (for downloading & online levels)

>>Windows 9x/ME/XP

>>24-bit resolution (32-bit recommended)

*looks at model, model data, then specs that Transworld wants*

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

On a more serious note, I must say, thats a tad too high in poly count, that machine would really work to push something like that

Here, I made a quick one, 284 Faces (Polygons). With DBPro's set object smoothing command, it'll look like its a bit higher poly.

I can send it over to you if you want. I can understand what kind of a situation you're in (just take a look at my earlier models when I confused polycount with detail). I too made my models like that. But, hey, a bit of practice makes perfect. Shouldnt be too long before you start cranking out pretty decent models.

Cheers,
Preston

Here's my most recent model. The specs are at the corner of the picture. So, is that low enough poly count??? And this is only my 3rd model.

Your using too many primatives. You need to explore polygon modelling.

transworld- your "kitti" model is pretty cool, but you shouldn't model things like eyes and mouths... just make them in the texture! saves lots of polygons!

I cannot model too good yet, that is why I am using primitives. I am
still trying to animate it. I am making that game that I requested the team for... Harvest Crossing. It is not going to be online but
maybe have a LAN or maybe you can visit other peoples towns if you are invited. This is going to take a lot of time b/c I need to model tons of stuff so each players experience varies. More models coming.

Try starting with a cube and then extruding.
I'm using anim8or too and this 'box editing' is very convenient in anim8or.

Primitives like spheres have idiotically high poly counts, and besides, they don't look even near as cool than a model that has been started from a box. Primitive models just look like a pile of separate objects.
