ok well i just bought this thing a few months ago but havent had time to use it since now. So I'm looking at the 3d Monster Hunt tutorial. The first few things seem simple, like the Print stuff...the making cubes and whatever... im fine up till about 1.4, then the rest is confusing the hell out of me! I just don't it! Please don't say I'm and idiot, because im in 10th grade and in honors classes with a 4.0 gpa! My question is, is DB just hard at first, or is it just really hard??!?! Thanks a lot

DB is just hard at first. Im in the same grade you are. Its very confusing at first (started a few years ago) but gets to be very easy once you learn the langauge.

Oh right

Rich gives out mod ability, but dont email him, your chances will just go down. You should be here for at least a half a year (and I mean At LEAST) before you become a mod.... Anyhow, they arent looking for new mods in the first place. First you have to build a good forum rep (help newcomers, dont flame people, be a nice person, the list goes on)

Just keep at DB, pretty soon youll be programming the game of your dreams Im working on an RPG tutorial that may be of some help as well

It's not darkbasic that's hard, it's the programming. It's not something your used to, and it's really not similair to anything else. I started programming on graphing calculators, and it taught me everything I've ever needed to know.

DarkBasic is one of the most hardest langusge to learn.
The language itself is not that hard after you get the general idea
but it is hard to learn take C++ for example the language is harder
but its much easier to learn because there are many tutorials in the
internet unlike DarkBasic that has only a few tutorials.

Hey I'm also in the 10th grade, 3.5GPA, IB(One of the highest class at my school, above Honors.) To tell you truth, I thought DarkBasic was hard, but then you start to get used to it.

I've been writing a tut for noobs (and maybe others). I'm not sure if I should release it yet cos I was planning on doing some 3D and sprite stuff. So far it's just basics with not much graphical stuff. Actually, say if you want to have a look and I'll email it to you, you could test it for me to see if I could put anything better or add stuff .

Do you bite your thumb at me sir?

I found the easiest way to learn was to pick a project, and then extract the bits I needed from the tutorials as I went along.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I started with Pong too, but not in Dark Basic. My first actual Dark Basic game was Firewall, which I am still working on. It is almost commercial quality now (see below in my signature), and I will be selling it pretty soon through a publisher. I remember the days when I started it; last year around April 17. It began with one matrix and cones, cubes, and spheres for robots. It has evolved to a full-fledged RTS game with smart AI, many robots, and awesome special effects.

One thing to remember: start small, build from there.

Good Luck

(Chris, you could use a few pixels off of your sig too, I am in 800x600 and I have to scroll)

What Raven said is so true, I barely passed highschool but I love darkbasic. It's only eaiser because you don't have to do so much extra stuff to get extra results. But it's a way of thinking that opens up the programing world.

There's a lot of tutorials if you click on the strain at the very top

Oh, I just noticed you didn't say which DB you meant , I have a feeling you mean dbc, not dbpro . My tut is for DBPro, although most of the basics are the same. I will send you the tut, but some of the code I give may not work. I hope it works anyway.

I only in 9th grade and I fully understand DarkBasic. I first look at Stutt Your Stuff and wanted to create a game like it but kind of bettter. I created a pong game and then created a space invaders game, then I experiemented, and here I am now. Just experiement and ask questions and it will be easy soon.

I didnt find darkbasic a bit hard untill i got to like that darn math coding =\

But then again i also studied C++ (never did anything with it but...) for about one month but you'll get the hang of it is super easy once you learn all the basics.

@Phaelax Well said! I'm not doing too shabby myself... but I'm definitely an "average" coder.

@rr12 If you are having difficulty grasping the programming concept, then try the Binary Moon tutorials, get the Beginner's Guide To DarkBasic Game Programming book, or even go as far back as to learn to program in QBASIC. QBASIC is OLD and thus doesn't use advanced graphics commands, so now in its retirement days it kind of lends itself to be a starting point for people who will eventually move on to DB, VB, and C++/#.
