Question: Why isn't the black indestructable box black and why aren't planes made out of them?

Then comes tomorrow and you're a little shorter of your breath and one day closer to your death...

Its partly due to aerodynamics and partly due to the structure of the black box.

The "indestructible" black boxes owe a lot of their sturdyness to the way they are shaped and built. Its not just the materials in them that make them "indestructable".

Further, the structure of the black box isn't very aerodynamic at all. In fact, its probably the worst shape possible to make an airplane out of.

As for the indestructable black box not being black, I think it has to do with the fact "black box" is just a term for completely encapsulated functionality. Has nothing to do with color whatsoever.

So if someone managed to make an airplane out of the same material as the blackbox it either a). wouldn't fly or b). Would fly just poorly and it still wouldn't be indestructable(that whole shape contributing to strength thing).

Hope I managed to enlighten you with this lengthy, but well reasoned post. But you probably already knew all this stuff anyway and were probably just trying to sound smart. Well in that case I think I one uped you in that department.

Black box used to actually be black, until someone realised that a brighter colour such as Orange/Yellow/PaleBlue is far easier to see in a bunch of char black remains of an aircraft.
(and the BlackBox device is not originally from AirCraft but from Submarines)

As for why the plane isn't made out of the same stuff, well actually it is. The difference being is the black box is a very small device surrounded by 3" thick Poly-Alloy (most aircraft this is Steel + Aluminium) and weights in at around 95lbs for a small box which is approx ~ 12"x8"x8"

Aircraft must weigh in at under 30t else when the 80-160t of fuel is added the aircraft would never take off.
if you knew just how thin the walls of an aircraft were chances are you'd never want to step on one again

god know why the hell everyone is guessing though, i mean British Airways Online has an extensive history on this stuff.

Useless Fact #3: Cars will soon be able to eject their engine when they crash, this would be triggered the same way as the airbags. It would create a larger crumple distance to reduce the shock from a crash and not to mention it would spare the engine as well.

Maybe it ejects the engine downward with enough force that the front of the car goes airborne? :-P

The funny similar joke that came along only about 5 years ago (new) was why do parachuters wear a helmet when they jump out of a plane?

Actually that's similar to what it does do. It shoots the engine downwards and backwards so it goes skidding out from under the back of the car.

Someone was talking about it and I asked him about it and he said he didn't know

As for ejecting engiunes, if an enguine was shot out while the car was going 70 mph going under your car wouldn't it destroy the bottom and send you flying at whatever you were going to hit? If it was going up, it would probably kill you as Chris said.

Err, no because it bascially just drops it out, it doesn't use enough force to do anything to the car.

Plus, I don't know what kind of car continues to go at 70mph after it's crashed. o_O

bah, screw ejecting the engine, eject the driver and passengers

/me imagines a crash in a tunnel with that scenariou

...nevermind...

But seriously, I think an engine ejecting downward would probably rip your legs off (unless you have a lot of clearance under there).

Preston

lol yeah, it's activated at the same time as the airbags.

I don't know how it works exactly but I'm pretty sure they found a way to get it to not take your legs off when it ejects

Comical Scenario:

You take a drink from you coke and break to late, tapping the car in front of you slightly. You both get and and say "no damage, leave it there" when the engine of your car flies out, sending your Chassis on his car, crushing it. The engine skids up the road and causes a major pile up. Har har

Whoever told you that engine thing is pulling your leg man. Think about it. How do you get a 3 foot tall engine block into a 6 inch tall space? If you ejected the engine downward you'd send you're car flying. Whats the point of a safety improvement if it makes you much more unsafe?

Well that's the first I've heard of the Discovery Channel lying. Obviously you don't see how it works properly (I don't either, because I only saw part of the show) but I'm pretty sure they'd find a way for that not to happen.

"Well that's the first I've heard of the Discovery Channel lying."

Its not the first time I've heard of them lying.

". Obviously you don't see how it works properly "

Obviously.

" but I'm pretty sure they'd find a way for that not to happen."

I'm not. You can't fit a 3 foot engine into a 6 inch space. Its physically impossible. Besides, why would you want to do it?

You mentioned earlier that it would increase crumple distanced but this would only be the case if you forcefully ejected the engine out. There simply isn't enough time for an engine to completely fall out by force of gravity in the fraction of a second that a crash takes place. That fraction of a second is the only time when a large crumple distance would be of any use.

You'd have to have something that could forcefully eject an engine block(and those suckers aren't light) in a fraction of a second and I just don't think that that could be feasiably done. At least not in a commerical car and without great risk to the driver. Not to mention that whole issue of space.

Sorry man. I just don't believe that it can be done.

If you only saw part of the show how do you know that befor you heard this "idea" that the guy said befor you started watching "well that was a good idea but then this other guy at the factory had a idea that sounded good but it just wouldnt work..." and said that minutes befor you turned to that channel and then you turn to that channel and they are explaining this whole thing that you missed and you just got the wrong idea?

isnt that possible?
