i thought general talk was about everything *but* coding... dont forums mods normally set up a general chat simply so that all the nonsense goes there instead of the main boards?

Help with computers, important events (IE presidential election), a few fun and game posts are good, but people like Linuxuser and CMC just make a plethora of posts which could all be one.

General chat is for everything which can include programming. Like Mouse said, there's a few individuals abusing this.

You addressed this to Indi, so that is more like an instant message, or Chat room. You should really be talking to the forum. I mean, you can talk to an individual if it is important, but some people are just saying hello to individuals, like a chat. Some people are bringing IRC conversations back to life on here, and that is like continuing the IRC chat too.
