what are some good programs for making music for games
and what is the best way to get sound affects (royalty free)

Van b made a music making program - 'vsd tracker' in db a while ago which was pretty good - http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=showcase_view&i=92
http://3dcafe.com/asp/sounds.asp - There's a load of free sound effects
and of course the sounds which come with DB (In the media folder)

If you go to finalemusic.com there is a free version of their usual big guy Finale, called Finale Notepad 2003. It doesn't support MIDI, but to get that just own up $20 to get NotepadPlus.
