Search the 3D forum. This question pops up almost weekly. Also, check the sticky notes, they are there for a reason.

What zircher said. But I'd recommend anim8or (www.anim8or.com). I just downloaded it today and went through the first tutorial. I think I'm in love.

GMAX is for those learning 3dsmax.

Look for JTedit and DeleD, both free editors made by people on the forums (showcase section or 3dchat)

Does Gmax create models that export OK for DB Pro i.e the textures map correctly, and the animations play?

Another question...can you use the Quake style maps from Gmax in DB Pro?

gmax does static, boring, unmoving (and any other adjective you can think to describe unanimated) models if you have the right exporter and converter program. I've tried many time, and gmax does not do animation to DB. You could try using gmax to make the model, then use a freeware 3d modeller to do the animation.

Anim8or
trueSpace3.2
JTEdit

And others.

Can you export anything from Maya PLE that will be usable in DBP?

If not, it isn't worth the time to download or the effort to learn. Additionally, if you don't plan on buying or working with the full version, there is no insentive to learn such a complex program. [Same comments go for GMAX.]

Might give a nod to GMAX because you can use Tempest to make MD3s which Milkshape can read and convert. BUT, you have to buy MS3D so that 'voids' the FREE part of the request.

Please educate me, if I've missed anything.

First, select your object, press OBJECT -> Export and save it as a 3DS file in your game's directory. Make sure the textures are there as well and, tada, you've got a pot (load object "pot.3ds", 1)

Hello,
I just happened to find this thread and I'm so glad I did! I'd like to know if there is a way for me to download anim8tor and burn it onto a CD because I have limeted space on my computer (which my family will not have around for much longer because it is CURSED!)I am only using the amin8tor for personal use to create people and animate them. Thanks to all! Clear skies and fair weather!

All you gotta do is get a blank CD-R or CD-RW and then make sure you have a cd burning disk drive, and a program that tells the drive what to burn. A lot of computers now come standard with disk burning drives, and normally you just click the file, copy-paste it into your disk drive (usually D:\), and then click on the side Write These Files to CD and it should go.

contrary to what alot of people said I would NOT recommend using anim8or. It does not export any animation information and i don't think it exports texture info either. Therefore, when you animate it will not move if exported. I tried it, it didn't work and asked the creator himself. it only saves animations/material in .an8 format.
