Why is it that on my 56K modem I only got a top download rate of 2.87KB a second while I was downloading a demo? I didn't even have any IE windows running!!

A) Bad connection speed (I usually get 4.0 kbps on a 40.0 kbps connection, 5.0 kbps at a 44.0 kbps connection)
B) Server you're downloading from is slow

Well, if you're connected at 44000kbps then you should only be able to get 4.4 k/sec at max. It took me awhile to realized this. But when I was in town at a friends, I noticed that her 56k connected at 256000, and that her downloads never went more that 25 k/sec.

I love broadband too, 2.2Mbps... "beeyyoottcchh"

2.87 x 1024 x 8 bits is 23511, not bad if you're connected at 28.8, which is what most modems connect at unless you have new telephone lines to your house. Could also be if your ISP has all of the 56KB lines tied up that they have dropped you down to a 28.8 line.

RGT may be gone but the best DBP forum is still alive and kicking, check it out.

kilobits per second is calculated in 1000 blocks not 1024.

<unit> (kbps, kb/s) A unit of data rate where 1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second. This contrasts with units of storage where 1 Kb = 1024 bits (note upper case K).

My dad is deputy head of my school so we live on campus and we get their internet.

It's quite wierd - I used to have 56k dialup and you had to think about downloading something 600k, now I can stream movies on Kazaa.

i have broadband and downloading my demo from my own webspace which i usually get about 60k/s (my top speed as i'm 512k atm) from i got 2k/s once, i think someone must have actually noticed my team request and downloaded the demo lol, anyway, it may just be the server but i used to get 2-15k/s wheen i still had to use a 56k modem.
