Hi, everyone I'm back! I been off the forums for a while decided to drop back in. i found a new pc console system that will be powerful than the xbox coming soon!

go to this link

http://www.axisnova.com/articles/discover.shtml
main site http://www.discoverconsole.com

it also says it can read unmodified games. That could mean that Commericial DarkBasic Dev Team probably could sell their game to run on the DISCover System!!! The Discover starts at $299 (about 1.0 ghz), but you want a pentium 4 (3.2 ghz) except to pay like $1000.
It also comes with customized Windows XP! Go to the first link to learn more.Tell me what you think!! Do you think that us programmers can create games and have it to play on the Discover system

In other words it's yet another trimmed down PC that can play PC games. Dosen't really make a difference-- if it reads unmodified PC games, you just sell your product normally, don't you?

that's what i'm what i'm curious about. i think it's a good idea, but i just want to know if you can sell your darkbasic game and would it be able to run it on the system. they have different makes and models of it.

The concept is actually quite different. The DISCover system uses CDs, so it's basically just an ugly and low-end PC that can't browse the internet, manage music, etc. The Phantom actually has a pretty interesting concept going in its VPGN for gaming with no actual hardware/discs designed for it.

for the price, a PC without the monitor is a better deal.
But, as for the DB Q, makes no dif.
A big prob I see is most PC games don't use a game controller, but maybe that GC includes a mouse joystick thingy....

Maybe after its been around, the price will drop, but so will a PC with the same specs, and then it won't support the newest games at that time.

Yup.

Let's make a list:

Oh, and did I mention that the DISC company ridiculously PATENTED a home entertainment system designed to play PC games? Please!

Now to its credit, I have to admit the idea of automatically detecting a game thru custom BIOS and boot scripts, installing it to the hard drive, downloading patches, and even supporting expansion disks is a farily nice idea. But you can do all that on a PC, and the advantages of a PC are clear. If you want a PC-like gaming console, I think the Phantom is a far more solid idea... it also has a far better price tag for its default (far better) model!

You forgot an item or two on your rant.

DISCover, potential market is huge number of console aware but PC illiterate gamers.

PC, I'm already the tech suport department for two brother-in-laws. I rarely buy PC games for my kids anymore because I'm sick of the belly aching and moaning when it is not perfect. If a GC/X-Box/PS2 game screws up, Itell them to take it back to the store.

DISCover, can benefit from lower costs through mass market deals.

PC, requires very expensive frills to achieve the perks that you mentioned. No standardization means massively increased tech support cost, additional hardware testing, and retail returns (which can kill a developer's profits faster than a team of hackers.)

Plus there's a reason why games for all systems are developed on a PC. Point proven.

That's not very hard. XBox technology is two years old.

Of course, my real questions are about the business side. Like, how much will DISCover certification and branding cost?

There isn't any-- you release your game, if it's popular enough they create scripts for it. That means that bedroom coders like us have basically 0 chance of being recognized by them, so our games will never be featured on the console unless you actually pay them to make the scripts for you. Seeing as this is an overpriced 3rd party console that's fit to flop, even if you did get them to make the scritps, I seriously doubt anyone will happen to have both the DISCover console and one of our games.

@mouse

The resolution on my high-def tv is much higher. Not that I like consoles though.

So bored, had to post something.

If you happen to have a DISCover with a video card with HDTV, and happen to have an HDTV, then I suppose the resolution could go up to 800x600, yeah .

lol, yup... still hate consoles. The only console that even came close to tickling my fancy was the XBox.
