Is this a .x-model? How is it created? I know a little how the levels from WipeOut were created.

I would imagine they are .x models (in the game), but the author comes around once in a while, so I'll let him answer if he comes around.

most modelling programs can export .x files.

if you don't have any modellers, I would personally suggest Milkshape, it's cheap and very powerful for low-polygon (game) modelling.

p.s. cool website!

they either make a section of the track and extrude it, or they would use splines to make the track easily,

ither way would create the same results when done right

Ideally you would use a package that supports lofted splines. It is possible to do it by extruding, but it takes a lot longer and is much harder to tweak.

Essentially you draw a cross section of your track. Which might look something like this :

-----\_______________/-----

Then you would flip into top view and draw your track as a spline. Becuase it's a spline you have control over the number of points, how tight/loose each turn is. Then probably slip back into side/front view and add some ups and downs to the spline ( unless you want a totally flat track.

Then loft the cross section along the spline and the package will create the track for you. The big advantage is that a good 3d package will even take care of the UV mapping for you.

I don't think Milkshape supports anything like this, and I doubt Wings does either. All the expensive packages do, but I can't think of any cheap packages that do it offhand. If you don't know of any and you'd like me to see what I can find, just ask. I have a whole bunch of links to modellers and I'll go through them if it'll help.

I'd start with a 6x6 grid of plains, all UV mapped to 1 tileable image (like the texture from the motorbike demo) - then take that grid and duplicate it end to end for about 10 times. Now you have a long track that you can bend and rotate to layout your track. After that you'd need to add the trackside details and patches, but it's a good solid way to get the track carved quickly.

Most professionals would use something like Lightwave or 3DSMax to design a track, the above method should work in any modelling app.

The VanB method sounds right for me. I started creating vertexes and faces (i use Milkshape) but never thought of making a 'building block'. Very creative.

I dont think i can do lofting in milkshape :-(

I'm back

I tried lofting 2 splines but i don't get the right results. I created the track in Illustrator en imported it in 3D Studio. Created a 'cross section' just i simple line (spline) but if i loft it goes all ways except for the right way. Tried rotating pivots etc. But doesn't work.

Is there a tutorial about creating a road or track? Tried 3D Cafe etc.

{EDIT] o, and can i use QUAD SIDES?

@Dennuz666 v2

I've re-instated (for a while) this tutorial I did which will show how the tracks & collisions were done:
