Well not sure to put this in 3d or 2d forum since its kinda both but here gos.

K few Qs

can you make 3D images and then somehow convert them to 2D to save time/room? if so how?

this is the style i want to get(i just suck at art and I'd do anything to not have to draw stuff over and over in 2d)

Is Anim8or or milkshape better? Anim8or seems to be better(its free), but I have heard mixed reports about it working with DBP.
Prob get milkshape just wanted to othe peoples opinions.

Well, Anim8or wont let use use animated 3d objects because it cannot export animated models in a format db can understand. If your using static models then your fine. Also, if you want to render 3d images to make them 2d sprites (which is what i think you mean here) then it can also do that. You need to animate your model, then Anim8or has a feature to let you export every frame of that animation to an image. Then youve just got to cut and paste them into a big sprite page and set it up with code.

Milkshape is still a pretty good 3d program, especially for the amateur modeller as its very cheap yet powerful and capable of doing the things that most 3d game developers need.

Currently thinking of a new company name
Sticking to a project idea for once

BTW would it be possible to make a model in Anim8or then somehow export it to 3ds (wich is what I think MShape uses) import it into MShape and animate it?

One problem with Milkshape is that it has no render capability. If your sole goal is to make sprites from 3D models, you might want to consider DoGA CGA L2 or L3. It's free or relatively cheap. You can use it to make 'rag doll' multi-jointed models and animate/render them in the motion editor. L3 has anime/cell shading support so you can make some very neat characters with a minimum amount of work.

if you have DBC i have a 3d to 2d render script that you can modify or use as is to render the sprites within the DB environment at any angle with any amount of rotations

That's pretty clever and something that you could tweak to add special effects, play animations, etc. You'd still need a third party program like Milkshape to make the animation sequences.

I suggest starting with L2 and then moving to L3 when you've got the hang of it.

Hey to make more parts for DOGA L3 do you have to use the Minzo lab thing, or could you use MilkShape?

L3 has a tool called the Object Convertor. It can read in SUF files and DXF files. It can also assign colors, smoothing, and texture mappings. Milkshape has DXF export so you could use it as a parts creation tool for DoGA.

I find that Metasequoia LE is a solid polygon editor and it doesn't hurt that it is free or that it can export to X as well as SUF files. If it had animation, it would totally replace MS3D for me.

When you get to L3 (after playing with L2 for a while) drop me a line or visit my DoGA fan page. I have links to some translated files, tutorials on library maintenance, and a links to a ton of new parts and special effects.
