I personally think this is a great software.Specially for character animation.

There have been mentioned many other ones. But this has IK, joint pinning(this is not even in that good Character Fx) (making a joint glued to the ground or whatever the point during animation (sliding-killer )) and lots of features, besides a very nice renderer. I yet see the uvamapping is in progress, but it can import uv mapped models. As I say it, is way easy to handle. One of the easier ones I have seen.

The pitty is that it is lacking directx 8 export. It has a -said to be so- easy scripting system, so to make the dx 8 export(animation, bones and weights) plugin.

I suppose this is not an easy task, though. I just don't know.
But you would all have one more free sofware for animating with weights for free, and you know there aren't much out there...

You need to download a recent java runtime (explained well and briefly in Art Of Illussion site) for executing it (once installed, download the program and double click the *.jar file)

I have been able to manage it without any look at the manual (there's a 9mb file manual done by an active user) So, it speaks of its intuitive nature, which is quite good. And I think is very powerful.

For now it supports well OBJ import and export, as far as I know.
Adding it a directx 8 *.x animated file with the weights would be greatly wonderful, and very good not only for the Dark Basic pro comunity, but for any othe rthat imports directx weighted files, which luckily are already a few.

Thanks for reading!

ooops

the link :

http://aoi.sourceforge.net

Is not only free, is open source, I forgot to say.

there's already a petition about the format, and there are two forums, 'scripting' and 'developer', that may be the good ones for this, in that place.

It also has a procedural texture editor. Those are always fun to play with. Back when I was a Moray/POV Ray fan, I used them all the time.
