Hey all, I'd just like to announce the upcomming UDBM, a free e-zine all about DarkBASIC

Expected release is March 31, 2004 and will feature articles from the community as well as a few good ones by myself It's different from the DB Newsletter (here at this site), in that it will feature tutorials, code snippets, and like I said, community articles. You can submit anything you wish to have published here, or even ask questions using this form:
http://www.dbspot.com/j2dstudios/site/modules/contact/
I will try to respond to all sent messeges as quickly as possible.

When using this form, you can send complete articles, DB related questions or questions about the UDBM itself or anything else you can think of.

Signing up to the site is free and easy, and requires no confirmation email, so you don't have to putz around. To sign up to the UDBM newsletter (to be informed when the UDBM is out) you will need to put in a valid email address and confirm that, and it doesn't have to be the same email address you signed up with.

A special thanks out to [Jimmy] for making this possible!

Click the link in the signature below or the submission link above to go to the site. Thanks for reading and happy coding!

BTW, the site is ad-free and I don't make a dime off of it, so don't think this is a gimmick or something..

Cool sounds like a good idea. I would rather pay for a real color magazine though, one that I can take with me everywhere.

I wonder if anything like this would be possible. I would subscribe in a heartbeat if it was legit.

Question is if there was a proper printed DB mag, would there be a big enough market for it to cover its production costs and make it worth producing?

Doesn't anyone remember the "game maker mag" that was released late last year in the UK? They released one issue and it flopped like a fat bitch in a swimming pool. (odd similie, I know). Unfortunate, cos I would've liked such a magazine. There's a definate gap in the market for an ameteur gamedev publication, but there's not enough takeup...

Well when you've got such a large DBP community, I'm thinking quite a few of us would buy it, especially if it was posted here. I would've bought the 'game maker mag' if I knew about it but unforunately I think it was uk only.

I wanted to get the game maker mag too but couldn't find it... Apparently us Eastern Englanders are only interested in tractors.

Igoe a brand new combine harvester, and Oi'll give ewe the key

Anyone seen the Retro Games mag, it's made it to issue 2. The first one was good (but I didn't have £6.00 in my pocket at the time), it had original adverts for all sorts of machinery, such as full-sized Arcade games, Vic 20, Dragon 32, BBC etc.

Hi,

I found one copy of the game maker mag, but someone had nicked the CD. I didn't buy it, but wish I had anyway, as I didn't know they'd only do one edition!

As for Retro, yes that is pretty good but not much there you can't d/l for free... IMPO the best games mag (multiformat+retro) is Games TM. The retro sections are excellent, covering developers (Code Masters, Bitmap brothers), a different retro console each week, there is a for sale section, game charts from years ago, loads of stuff.

I'd also buy a DB magazine, if there was such a thing. It would more likely be a "TCG" mag, but that would be cool, could have tutorials on CShop etc. as well as DBC/DBP.

Anyway, good luck with the e-zine, looking forward to it.

See ya.

I think DB is too narrow a scope for a printed mag. I could imagine a small but perfectly formed niche for Amateur Game Development, covering your mainstream languages, DB, Blitz, DirectX, modelling and so forth.

Kind of like the good ol' days, when you got a mag with Speccy, Commodore and (dare I say it) Dragon source codes, all ready to type in.

Well, I imagine that's where this e-zine could go. "This months source is a *blank* game, provided by *blank*"....

I'd be interested in contributing I think. Who wouldn't?

lol
and from this or next month, they are integrating the game maker mag into pc format, i presume it will just contain the artices that were in the 1st copy but it gives people the chance to get it, so

Flick that switch...*BANG*...Not that one!

well it will contain some of that, but that's not really the point of this mag... It's sort of a portal to what's going on with the community the past month, including opinions and other such things... besides, the mag will be what you ppl make of it

If you want it printed, you can always buy glossy printer paper Unfortunately I don't have the resources to make a printed mag, sorry..

Nope. Which is probably why TGC has never published any such magazine. I don't know any hobby language that's had a printed publication other than Visual Basic. There used to be a whole bunch of these types of magazines back in the 80's for the commodore computers there was Computes Gazette and apple had a magazine, and tandy/coco had rainbow and so on. Those machines had limited ram, and their programs were usually under 100 lines of code. The only way you'd be able to do this is with a cd magazine. Any printed medium would be too costly and the market for darkbasic professional is puny. I love this language, but the users of it would be categorized as a cult user group. There's not enough of us at this point in time.
