Dear user of Scientist.com gateway e-mail server,

Your e-mail account has been temporary disabled because of
unauthorized access.

For more information see the attached file.

For security purposes the attached file is password protected.
Password is "02037".

Sincerely,
The Scientist.com team

-----------------------------------

Well what do you guys make of this?

It's definitely not from the admin of mail.com (who I go through), because then it would say it's from "support@mail.com". Scientist.com is owned by mail.com, so they can offer different e-mail addresses such as mine: (undisclosed)@mad.scientist.com.

Obviously it's a fake. Also, there's a file included called "message.zip" (that gives me even more proof that it's a fake). Heh, I'm so tempted to d/l the thing just to see what it is, but I know I shouldn't take the risk...

lol yeah, I know what you mean! I hate it when there's a zip and you're so curious to find out what's inside. You know it's a virus but...

It was released into the wild in the last couple of days. It's mainly aimed at companies with their own mail server, it looks more authentic. I believe it's a variant of Beagle or Sky.

Another one (which some of you have posted before):

Quote: "Dear friend,

I am Mrs. Sese-seko widow of late President Mobutu
Sese-seko of Zaire, now known as Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC). I am moved to write you this
letter. This was in confidence considering my present
circumstance and situation. I escaped along with my
husband and two of our sons out of Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC) to Abidjan, Cote d'ivoire
where my family and I settled, while we later
moved to settled in Morroco where my husband later
died of cancer disease.

However, due to this situation we decided to change
most of my husband's billions of dollars deposited in
Swiss bank and other countries into other forms of
money coded for safe purpose because the new head of
state of (Dr) Mr Laurent Kabila has made arrangement
with the Swiss government and other European countries
to freeze all my late husband's treasures deposited in
some european countries. Hence, my children and I
decided laying low in Africa to study the situation
till when things gets better. Like now that
president Kabila is dead and the son taking over
(Joseph Kabila). One of my late husband's chateaux in
Southern France was confiscated by the french
government, and as such I had to change my identity so
that my investment will not be traced and confiscated.

I have deposited the sum Fourteen Million United State
Dollars (US$14,000,000,00.) With a security company
for safe keeping. What I want you to do is to indicate
your interest that you can assist us in receiving the
money on our behalf, so that I can introduce you to my
son who has the out modalities for the claim
of the said funds. I want you to assist in investing
this money, but I will not want my identity revealed.
I will also want to acquire real/landed properties and
stock in multi-national companies and to engage in
other safe and non-speculative investments as advise
by your good self.

May I at this point emphasize the high level of
confidentiality, which this upcoming project demands,
and hope you will not betray the trust and
confidence, which I repose in you.In conclusion, if
you want to assist us, my son (Kennedy) shall divulge
to you all briefs regarding this project, tell you
where the funds are currently being maintained and
also discuss remuneration for your services. For this
reason please kindly furnish us your contact
information, that is your personal telephone and fax
numbers respectively for validation purpose and
acknowledge receipt of this mail.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs. Mariam M. Seseseko. "

The Nigerian / African "419" scam has been going snce the 1980's, they used to do it by fax. Apparently it's done by individuals, not organised gangs like you might think.

And yes, people lose millions a year to these con artists, it's mainly high-flying financial business men that fall for it.

That's pathetic.

(Not the authors, just the people who fall for it. The authors are geniuses. )

there was something on TV about all the big scams and about tyhe 419 scam...

They said that it is said that 15% of nigeria's income comes from this 419 scam but i dunno bout that so in anycase the person who made this scam up needs to learn to program because obviously they could do well at it...err i mean games....not viruses that steal bank accounts and peoples names and addresses and leave your toilet seat up....

The search continues.

I'd hardly call that a 'safe investment', unless of course you only invest in blue chip companies, but then it'll probably backfire and you'll lose everything.

It's also interesting how the name is spelt with a hyphen in the first sentence but signed without a hyphen at the end. Silly rabbits.
