3 questions for the experts:

1. Can I put a 8x AGP card in a 4x AGP slot?

2. If I replace the mobo and processor, will I have to reinstall Win 2K Pro?

3. I have a 8x CD rewriter and a 2x DVD drive. If I get an 8x DVD rewriter, which of the current drives would you replace?

1: Yes, some performance loss though
2: most definatly. whenver you install a new mobo you should format your HD
3: Personally I wouldnt buy a DVD writer. But if you must buy one replace the cd writer.

The cards are backwards compatable so it should work.

If it boots then technically no, but it's nice to so you don't have the drivers for the old hardware floating about and possibly causing conflicts.

Which ever one is slowest or the one that makes the most noise / takes longer to spin up.

1. Yes - small performance loss but shouldn't be noticeable

2. Did this recently on 2k with no problems - windows handled it fine. 2k is pretty solid.

3. I'd get rid of the cd writer if the dvd writer can write to cds.

If it ain't broke - try harder.

In the beginning, the universe was created...
This made alot of people very angry and it has been widely regarded as a bad idea...

1..yes, will work fine, just a touch slower than it should be

2..2k pro will handle the new hardware just fine, my homemade only had a reinstal when I swapped to xp for a while, the original win 98 install patched and updated has been ghosted and swapped over on each upgrade and apart from one minor niggle with an AGP bios driver that could well have happened on a fresh install, no problems at all.

3..get rid of the DVD drive, 2x is pants and the new writer will play dvd for you anyway, and haveing 2 writers can often be useful (archiving for eg), why chuck a good writer and keep a slow dvd player??

just my 2 bobs worth

@Red_eye...no, nearer the £300 mark, and if you don't know what SLR stands for, you won't want it
