simple really, but taxing on a compuer

first model a basic shape of the energy thing, about 3 or 4 plains aranged in the shape you want is good.
then texture with a good energy type texture(MAKE SURE THE AREA YOU DONT WANT TO SEE IS BLACK)

then put up the emissive to pure white(VERY IMPORTANT)

then bring it into DB and put a ghost effect on it.

You can also use a 32bit PNG file to get multiple transparency values. Load the object, set object transparency to 1, load the texture, and apply it to the object. The kicker is you have to spend a lot of time on the texture to create the image and the variable transparency levels.

Empemitheos's method works, but it only allows two transparency settings: black at 100% and everything else as automatically ghosted at roughly 50%.

Pros and cons to each method.

this is a screenshot from the actual program.
only problem is that it kinda slows down when too many blasts are on screen

a dds file retains multiple levels of transparency as well. similar techniques could be frosted glass in a building etc..
