Hello all.

Recently I've been using JT Edit. Unfortunately, however, despite John's very good work to date JTEdit is very buggy and it keeps crashing. So I've decided to change modeller.

What I absolutely need in a low level polygon modeller is an import Direct X format facility (which rules out Milkshape, Wings3d and DelEd) and export the same.

I thought I'd invite advice as to which modeller to opt for. In particular, I'm considering 3d Canvas pro. I'd be interested in any feedback about that.

Cheers

Philip

actually in Milkshape look under tools/ DirectXmesh tools. unfortunately tho it doesnt import the animations but the mesh is loaded in fine.

Canvas is pretty good but it takes time to get to grips with.

You could also use some file convertor to convert your .x files into a format your modeller can read.

Use the free 3D modeller DeleD to get skilled in 3d editing! Visit http://www.delgine.com for more info.

Truespace is okay, yet I wouldn't recommend it anymore.

Pros:
1.) Fast&flexible interface
2.) Good price
3.) All in one package.

Cons:
1.) Undo doesn't work
2.) I've never got any of my own animations to work properly in DBP.
3.) They pretty much drop support for the older versions once the new ones come out.(Lots of reliance on plug-ins for me.)

As a fan of milkshape I feel I must urge you to rethink ruling it out of your list of potential modellers.

why do you need .x import som badly? if you want to be able to import existing models, you can use one of many excellent tools (such as Unwrap3D) to convert .x models into the native Milkshape format. once you have them in Milkshape format, you can just keep re-exporting whenever you make changes to the "mother" object.

that's what I do... I model in Milkshape (or convert and import into Milkshape and make changes), then do UVing with Unwrap 3D (which can load and save milkshape files flawlessly)... then when I'm ready I export to .x and bring it into DBPro.

Probably the two best are Milkshape and trueSpace. Milkshape is just a heaven for creating lowpoly game models without worrying about rendering. trueSpace3.2 doesn't support bones, but its animations have exported perfectly when I used it, and it renders pretty well. trueSpace 4.3 also added bones and better .x animation export. trueSpace 4's selling for the last time for only 80 bucks.

I know I'm investing in gameSpace, the Level Exporter, and Darkmatter....as soon as I get some money.

truespace 4.3 is less buggy than 6.x and gamespace 1.5 is even less buggy and exports .x almost perfect plus it come with a pre regesterd milkshape.

but my tool of choice is maya can't live with out it.

Thanks for all your posts guys - very helpful.

After some thought I've bought 3d Canvas Pro. I looked at Milkshape but ultimately opted in favour of 3CP.

Phillip - I've never tried 3CP, what did you like about it that made you choose it over Milkshape? (just curious)

Basically I didn't want to have to use a converter to import a *.X format model into Milkshape.

I realise that sounds a bit daft (and lazy) but I thought, what the hell, why not just get 3d Canvas Pro. Plus, its got support for *.dbo format and I get the impression that Lee is releasing a lot more access to this in U6. Looking ahead I've decided I'd like to be able to create *.dbo objects using a modeller directly without a converter.

Anyway, I'm new to 3d modelling so if my logic is bad or I am just plain crazy please don't tell me!
