Try wings3d. It's what I started on long ago. www.wings3d.com should have some tutorials somewhere.

Well i started with milkshape 3d . great tutorials and huge community.
After a year i went maya but i dont think that this is a program for n00bs

I like trueSpace3.2, and now I've decided to upgrade to gameSpace. If you like the trueSpace interface, then use that. Otherwise I'd go Milkshape (notice gameSpace comes with Milkshape free )

I downloaded blender, its a good free 3d modeler that is capable of many things. You can also find tutorials and starters on the website. Its www.blender.org (not.com!)

When it comes to programing, I'm on fire!

Other free modellers are JTEdit and DeleD.
