For some reason when I saw the title, I automatically thought of Professor Frink from Futurama.

Frankly I wouldn't go with anything 64 bit as of yet, just because it isn't standard and there's a lot of limitations/compatibility issues (as far as I know).

I dont know of any limitations of 64bit processors - they can run 32-bit software okay. Getting this was actually cheaper than getting most of the 32-bit laptops...

From what I have read, AMD have made sure 32 bit programs run just as well as an equivalent 32 bit processor.

What speed - fast or really fast?

Nick, I'll see you and raise you ten.

I recently bought the following desktop for the equivalent of GBP 500 in HKDs. Read it and weep boys and girls:

Intel P4 3.2ghz
Kingston 1gb ram (DDR 400)
GeForce FX 5900 w/ 128mg GFX card
Seagate 120 gb HDD
DVD/CD-RW
52x CD-Rom drive
Creative 5.1 Soundblaster
+ all the usual extras (keyb, mouse, tower, power supply, speakers etc.)

Yep, Hong Kong. Where computers are reasonably priced.

I also got a top of the range Sony 17" LCD monitor for about the equivalent of GBP 250.

Sickening, huh? The only slight problem is that HM Customs & Excise will require me to pay duty on them once they arrive at Felixstowe (they're on board a ship at the moment bound for Britain) but thankfully the duty is pretty small.

that thing will be old before it's optimized those are slower than my 32-bit 533mhz fsb dual 3ghz xeon w/ht 1mb cahce each, so do what you got to do.

don't let the fsb fool you 1600mhz ain't nothing with out the right floating point(FLOP but these are now up in the GFLOP) wich amd is not know for intel beats them every time and that is the actual power of the processor.

but i'll wait for intel's 64-bit processor with 8mb cahce.

I haven't watched TV in 15 months. The reason being I never bought a TV whilst I was here.

There is not much to watch in HK. A few Murdoch owned channels and also all the communist crap that Beijing pumps across the border. Watching the latter is very disturbing - it really brings home to you just what a horrible regime communism is (although there are plenty of other daily reminders - such as the local Beijing representatives' constant and fairly unsubtle threats about what will happen to HKers if they protest for democracy too much). Basically the communist channels are full of propaganda programmes portraying life in China as wonderful and China as the most superb place to live on the entire planet. Everyone are always very happy. Grass is always green. There is no crime and the government is kindly and benevolent. Its Orwellian. Roll over Goebbels - he was an amateur by comparison.

Horrible.

But enough of my rant. I merely conclude by observing that when you live in a democracy you take it for granted. When you've seen communism close up, you realise just how wonderful a democracy is by comparison. There was a time when I didn't bother to vote for the UK government. But when you don't have any right to vote, and you see hundreds of thousands of people marching through the streets to ask for it, and being denied time and time again, that changes your view.

I will never fail to vote EVER again.

I'm here for work. It was supposed to be a year from January 2003 but then I discovered a rather devious wheeze by the UK Inland Revenue to tax the pants off UK citizens who didn't stay outside the country for a whole tax year. The wheeze in question would have cost me GBP 40,000 - thats 40,000 quid - if I had left HK in January 2004. So now I am here until exactly 2 days after the current UK tax year ends (5 April 2004). Then I get on a plane. Then I'm back home.

Woohoo! Woohoo! Woohoo!

Not that I am happy at that prospect. No sir.

I practice international commercial litigation and arbitration, mostly with an industry focus of insurance, reinsurance, banking and international trade (i.e. sale of goods and trade finance).

But principally I specialise in making derogatory comments about communism and pretending to get on with my DBPro hobbyist project in my free time!

Intel Alpha 64Bit Itainium2 8MB Cache 800MHz FSB 2.8GHz (current fastest) dual processor... the Intel Alpha 32Bit Pentium4 HTEE is capable of outperforming it.
And if you want to see the Drystone speeds of the Intel Processors against AMD's then check the site; TCA's Athlon64 3000+ can outperform your Dual XEON/P4 Processor setup.

As for a FireGL; only a fool would purchase one of these cards.
Only cards worth spittle in todays market are the Creative Wildcat VP and NVIDIA QuadroFX.
There was a benchmark recently done of the QuadroFX 3000G against 2x FireGL T1 9400; the QuadroFX had a v-e-r-y comfortable lead against this competitors card.
NVIDIA are not winning awards and getting industry acclaim for thier high-end cards for no reason.
Just like AMD haven't got an 80% market spread and are now the industry standard for 64Bit processing. Particularly when thier Opetron 280 SP (1.8GHz) has recently been shown outperforming an Itainium2 3.0GHz Quad Processors (8MB Cache@866MHz FSB).

Sorry but there is really no issue with speed with these processors, and there is even less issue with compatibility as they work with any software that the AthlonXP do as the 64Bit part of the Athlon64 are simply an additional processor - a bit like the Writek Co-Processor gave 486 64Bit math processing.

The only time there would be compatability problems is if/when I got the 64-bit version of Windows XP, and drivers weren't availiable for any piece of hardware - apparently you can use the 32-bit versions. However, I wont have that problem for a while yet, by which time most companies would have 64-bit drivers anyway...

Its a very nice machine by the way - shame I had to have it repaired so quickly (that usually happens to me) - the hard drive had 16K of bad sectors...

By the way, the latest nVidia drivers seem to have fixed DBPro's anti-aliasing problems...

If only I could afford a Quadro card...
