This is possibly the wrong forum, if so I apologise. It's do to with 3D packages, but developing for them.

Does Mike/Lee plan to release DBO Import/Export plugins for the mainstream modelling programs? I don't know how long it takes or what's involved. If it's a time consuming process, then I guess it's best left to the community. I just figure that with the popularity of certain shareware tools, we could boost DBP's profile by through plugin support.

The programs I had in mind:
Milkshape
Ultimate Unwrap3D
Wings3D (may have to beg & plead an Erlang programmer on their forum)

Anybody with some better knowledge on the subject?

... and the rest is f-l-y

I agree that it will probably be a community thing. I think the latest version of Blender 3D would be an excellent choice for a DBO plugin. I have my personal favorites, but if you could point a new user at Blender 3D and say, "Bam! Here's a full blown 3D modelling and animation package for DBP that is absolutely free." That would be pretty cool. And, I think it would be a lot more effective than trying to create a plugin for MAX, Maya, LW, etc.

well, since the DBO format has already been (unofficially) released, anyone with the inclination can make a plugin for their favorite piece of software.

The only program I know right now with .dbo export functionality is Gile[s], a lightmapper that I use. It works fantastic!

If I had a C++ compiler and the knowledge how to use it, I'd write an exporter for milkshape- that would be cool!

Zircher I agree an exporter for Blender woule be fantastic... form what I understand it uses some kind of script language right? it might not be too hard to write up an exporter... certainly above me though

I would do it, but I'd probably need someone to hold my hand through the process. I've never written an exporter, let alone an exporter for a 3D app.

Blender uses Python for scripting, you can find some nifty scripts here. I like the World Forge script since I'm a fractal planets fan.

As for helping to make a Python DBO export script, I don't have the time and skills to really help. Sorry.

the only .dbo convertor is RobK's, and since it uses DBPro, information is lost (like vertex colors, etc)...
