Hey is it easier, or should I say, more effective/better looking if I made a level in a Gmax or something and put it in, or make verticle plains/boxes and put them together to make the levels.

definately both easier and more effective, and better looking to make your models in a seperate modelling program. you will have WAY more control over everything.

It's like when I started out with 3D programming. I used to create my levels by hand. Took hours to create a simple level. So I decided to create a leveleditor to make my life easier, which it did. So yeah, definately use an editor to create levels. And of course, DeleD would be a good start.

You could even take it a step further . Depending on how your game runs, you could make a level editor where you import stuff you make in DeleD into this level editor of yours and you can position it where you want, then your program saves the location and rotation of everything and you can write a function to read that info and make your level design go by a lot quicker.

I would only create a leveleditor for specific game needs. For example, you can use DeleD or any other modeller to create AND position your models in a 3D world. When finished, you can import that already finished world into a specific game editor which you could use to place game specific items (guns, health etc) in the world. Such editor could also be used to, for example, specify conversations characters in your game might have etc. In short, notice the difference between 3D modellers and 3D specific game level editors.

I'm not that top of notch programmer yet, I would have no clue on how to make one. Trust me, when I do learn I'll be making stuff because in my opinion none of this stuff out there for free suits anyone's needs. Maybe it's because my needs are different or because there for free, maybe both. But anyway...
Right now I'm trying to make a level using Metasoquia (or however you spell it, weird jap names get me everytime ). So far it's going pretty good but I know a true made-only-for-making-levels would be better. Anyone know of any BESIDES DeleD and Cartography shop thats free? I don't really like them to much. Carto's alright, but DeleD is kind of lame.

Thanks for calling DeleD kinda lame. I don't exactly appriciate months of hard work being called lame just like that without a good explanation of why you think it is! So would you care to explain WHY you think it's lame?

Well I mean it's not that bad. I like the interface and the basic concept of it but it can be improved greatly. I'm opening up a new forum called Improving DeleD.

lol, no problem. In fact, I've been improving the Export function so that it should produce better .x files for use with DirectX. Does DarkBasic use DirectX btw?

Anyway, a new version of DeleD (with Undo function!) will be released shortly.

hope im not off the point here, but you know in Max when you export your level as a .X references the places of objects in the file, and therefore you can just make one big map cut it up ,put it into DP and everything will be in the right place

So you can make things like forrests and stuff which have lots of polys and then delete them when ur out of sight so you dont lose ur frame rate

I'm makin' a cake...

?? ... Stradigos, it's perfectly normal in a conversation to go a little bit offtopic. Usually people will go back to the original topic after a little while. Also, you don't have to use CAPSLOCK ALL THE TIME BECAUSE PEOPLE MAY THINK YOU'RE SHOUTING AT THEM. And that isn't fun in a relaxed forum like this one.

Hamish (member of this forum) is creating a tutorial. He's already created the scene that will serve as an example but has to write the actual tutorial. Wait, let me mail you so we can talk about it, in case you don't want to wait for a tutorial.

LOL.

Quote: "Metasoquia (or however you spell it, weird jap names get me everytime)."

Um, Metasequoia is kind of that bastard Latin used to describe species and such. Red wood trees like the Sequoia are part of this family of great trees. Sequoia is an American Indian name.

I have no clue as to why Minzo Labs would name there editor after a big tree.

To keep this kind of on topic, also check out this thread about level building.
