Ha, after writing a nice lil letter detailing my problem, It tells me I don't have no forum profile... By By letter...

Anyways, heres the problem, me and my bud are creating a rpg entitled Lands of Nvar: The End of Time.

The engine is highly modified to accept .bsp files. Now what I want to happen is this.

1) Create the map in 3DS max 4.2
2) Create detail such as hills and tree's and crap
3) Convert it into a .bsp file
4) Be able to use my own textures

It'll be mainly an outdoor environment which will make things somewhat difficult but not impossible.

Now, I never worked with the .bsp file, but I've been having nothing but problems. Maybe its just cause im sick, tired, and angry at, well, just about everything.

So any help, answers, flames, questions. Just ask, ANYTHING will help right about now

I tried loading .BSP's I made for a few Half-life mods and none of them seemed to work. When I compiled there was just a blank screen. If I were you I would wait a few patches.

you want to make a level in max, export to a .X then convert to .bsp? Nooooo .X is your friend. the compiler that comes with DBPro is a bit crappy, and you have to seal your maps. AND there are loads of noted probs with bsp in DBP at the minute, cant remember if they are getting fixed in U6 or not.

For big outdoor environments bsp is bad too. Id stick to .X if you can, dont know how much of your engine is already set up for BSPs

aight, well, i'm more calm now :p, but ok.

I guess I could create them with .x ... But I pretty much have only modeling skills and very little programming skills at all. The engine can handle both formats, but I would like to stick with .bsp's for now.

Any tools, tips or ideas, on how to create the entire map file so that it can be converted to a .bsp?

Ok for bsp's check out this thread dude:

But seriously reconsider using BSP's for your RPG. They're primarily designed for enclosed environments in FPS games, and don't work correctly if you leave any open areas.

I'd honestly give it up and get stuck into .x modelling. The Panda .x exporter for Max 4,5 & 6 is excellent. and allows you to export a lot of max's animations too!

hehe not from me i dont bother i like the ability to make my maps in 3DSMax 5 and for them to just work rather than having to worry about sealing them.
