go get "VirtualDub", it's a free and FANTASTIC piece of software for converting all different kinds of video formats.

Go Go Gadget DBPRO!

I have downloaded virtualdub and many other programs just recently and I have only been able to convert quicktime files(.mov) to an (.avi) file that does not include sound. So I am still looking for a program to transfer windows media video (.wmv) files to (.mpg).
And I am also looking for a sound extractor for quicktime and windows media video formats.

Sorry for being to picky

You can try tmpeg http://www.tmpgenc.net/
Might be hard to find a free wmv -> avi converter as microsoft owns the format.
It's best to keep your videos in an open format in the first place.

What do you mean by "don't have the right codecs"?
All I know about codecs is that with my windows media player 9.0 I have all the latest codecs installed, but the media player can not save or export to .mpg or .avi.

codecs are the instructions / commands / codelibs to view import and export the varied film formats.

I tried to go to http://www.tmpgenc.net/ and I downloaded the program. It works great...the only problem is that it exports to .avi and the size of the file is 1GB

P.S. Getting back to the codecs. I have not found any codec for windows media player allowing me to export to any other file properly

tmpgenc will encode an avi file to an mpg or virtualdub will encode an avi with any of the codecs installed.

the main problem is that you are using the .wmv format, which microsoft owns, and therfore programs like virtualdub can no longer support.

if tmpeng is making such a big file, you need to change the settings from MPEG2 to MPEG1, or reduce the frame size/frame rate, audio settings, etc.

virutaldub is a fantastic program, once you learn how to use it you have virtually unlimited control over the video/audio settings

Try http://www.divx-digest.com
It has a overview over nearly everything you need to know about video, codecs, converter etc. The software section offer links to the programs and the article section gives good introduction and also advanced knowledge of how to...

The other way (the hard way!) Search the raw format to extract the data. http://www.wotsit.org/ maybe you can find info there on how the image data is stored.... (for that you should be able to code in a more general language, I think DBP is not the best choise for that kind of stuff.

To code or not to be...

I couldn't find anything at http://www.divx-digest.com, but http://www.wotsit.org/ seems to be just what I was looking for. I haven't looked at the downloads that I just got, but I am sure they will be interesting.
Thank You

I just finished looking at the downloads from http://www.wotsit.org/ and they have not helped me in understanding how to convert or extract the sound from the quicktime .mov files. If you have any more suggestions please tell me, or for that matter if you or anyone else has any more suggestions for programs or pieces of code that could help, it would be much appreciated.
