Hi,
I'm trying to figure out if I have USB 1.0 or 2.0. I've checked System Information,Device manager and the bill for my PC, but none of these give me the version number.
I downloaded a program from USB site and that told me that I have USB ports but no version info. It did say that "No Updates Are Needed" though.
From that info I guess it's 2.0. I do want to be sure, because I plan on getting an external Hard Drive this weekend. If it's 1.0 then I guess I should go internal.

You can usually tell from the motherboard specifications. New mobo models usually come with USB2, so you might wanna check the manual. Anyway, even if it was USB1 you can always buy the USB2 for a good price in your local shop.

My PC is a 2001 Gateway 950 Select. I think it's a K2 motherboard. Gateway gave me the wrong manual for it,so no help there. I guess I'll have to contact them and see what they say.

Definitely a USB1. I remeber USB2 only came out sometime during the latter half of 2002 or early 2003.

USB 2.0 was released 2000 Kabouter.
The difference between USB 1.0 and 2.0 is the same difference between Network CAT5 10Mb and 100Mb ...
the difference is almost literally speed.

1.0 ~1.5Mb/s
2.0 ~150Mb/s
quite literally the difference, and very few things require the extra speed.
there isn't actually any way to find out the version past actually getting the manual and checking.
you however can goto My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager ... and at the end double click on either the Root Hub or USB Port Driver;
Hub will give you Power Use & Driver will give you Bandwidth Use.
Bandwidth use for a 1.5Mb device on USB 1.0 is 40% Each.

So just find yourself a device you know will be highly demanding, like a printer or scanner.

you can get PCI USB 2 adapters, i have seen em in PC world for about £20 i think (might be more, cannot remember if thats the price for USB1 or 2)

Might solve ur problem

if its a new mobo then most likly it will have usb2.0 and get ADIA 32 it will tell you anything =)

AIDA is a very usefull program. And it is hungaryan, so i no need transalate it. It can make memory test too. I have a 180 Mbyte/sec transper rate. Yes, this is very week

Oh yeah, now I remember. I remember that it was my classmate who told me about 2.0 a few years back, and I forgot when that was Ack, he left for Alaska last year... bye bye...

Anyway, I'm still 1.0 because that classmate of mine said he had problems getting the 2.0 to work. My PC is old. Anyway, would USB2 devices still work with USB1?

Yeah USB2 will work on USB1, just slower. And if your OS is cleaver enough to know you dont have any usb2 ports, it will remind you how insignificant your life is and that a high speed device is pluged into a low speed port.

I picked up ADIA 32 and your right, it is a great prog. Unfortunately, it only gave me the same USB information that Device Manager did. It does give loads of great info. that I'm sure to need down the line.
@Spooky:
Very helpful site.My Device Manager only says VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller. According to the site, then I think I have to have a 1.0 or 1.1, because it doesn't say Enhanced anywhere.

I agree - I'm going internal. This will be the first time I've installed an HD, so if you or anybody else has any tips or suggestions then please let me know.

They're easy to install, you just screw them in, plug in the IDE cable (the fat one) and then plug in the multicolored power cable.
