Here is a screenshot from a game that i am creating

I was wondering if if would be possible for me to use some sort of particle effect to make it look like fire is coming from the back of the ship. And i would like it to get bigger when the ship moves forward, and to get smaller when the ship moves backward. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it might be but it might be hard to do if your new to particle effects your just as good to use a nice looking png file or something for it.

The search continues.

It's absolutely possible to use particles to create explosions, thrust and other cool effects. You can look at the on disk example of LType Demo for some source that does exactly what you asked. The LType Demo is only available through the DarkBASIC Pro CD.

Hands down the funniest synopsis for a game ever. All your base are belong to us!

I personally wouldn't touch the DBP particle system with a barge pole. Here's a temporary shot of something I was working on last night (temporary as in, it probably won't be here next week). You use lots of small plains, textured, ghosted and point them towards the camera.

The advantage of this method is that through very simple commands, you can create interesting effects. That purple thing on the right for example, All the billboards rotate around the square's centre, rise and fade. It looks a bit like a fire, only not.... For a jet, I'd scale the billboards randomly, per frame to give that chaotic, shimmery effect.

...and the rest is f-l-y

I tend to agree with adr until the new particle effect commands are released as the current incarnation can be frustrating if you wish to alter them a lot. they still work for certain aspects but need a little more work to be ace.

I own DB Pro, and I browsed over to Blitz Basic becasue I was curious.... and I noticed someone make a really cool particle system call particle candy....

I noticed a lot of plugins including Nuclear Glory offer versions for DB and Blitz... unfortunately Particle Candy didn't seem to have a DB version.... I'm telling you the Particle effects were excellent...

This is the site...

If you think it is worth while lets all solicit the creator of this Particle system and have him make a DB Pro version. It looks powerful. I played with the demos and I was impressed.

Those effects were great. He is very talented. I do hope that he does that for DBpro sometime.

I wrote the Team asking them to Port it over, or if they are considering. Here is the reply:

Quote: "Thanks for your feedback. Particle Candy has been designed for the Blitz
engine especially, so many changes would be neccessary when adapting it over
to Dark Basic to keep the highest possible performance. But there will
probably be a DB version in future, if there is enough interest.

Sincerely,
Mike Dogan, CEO
"

Guys, If you are interested in porting the particles over... please write them and show interets. I'm sure it will be a matter of time. Lets get a new tool for our DB effects tool box!

Hmmm Particle effects! i need/want (as in dont need but would like to have it, cause its really cool) A particle effect for some of my explosions in my FPS, rite here i go i want it to explode...simple so far ~(but i was playing Ghost recon the other day and say the explosion effects, they are so cool) i want a similar effect but for the particles to collide with objects (similar to the crappy ones in Kingpin) and then fade. i would also like to make the smoke blow away, not just fade away, dift into the distance, if you know what i mean, then fade. seeing as you all know alot bout particle effects i thought it was the place to go.
cheers

@Mr. Anderson:

Mayhaps you should make another thread solely for the purpose of getting people to send emails?

I'm glad that I have sparked more interest.

Is it appropriate for me to start a new thread with the same posts?

From the other forums I belong to, it is considered a no no

If no one objects I will. Which Section would be the best place to post?

Also, maybe with the new FPSC we will get better particle systems in DBPro. Cross your fingers

And have you guys sent in your emails - hehe
