hey,
anyone out there know if you can use
DoGA L2 or L3 for
"commercial purposes" ?
if you register it for the $20 or $40

i emailed them; no response.
i checked the faq; nothing there that i could be certain of.

i'm not going to buy the higher versions
if they can't give me what i need.

i prefer to go strictly legitimate
(all legal bases covered) hoping
the best case scenario happens.

help.please.thanks.bob.

You should ask Team DoGA. Try using Bablefish to translate it and send an English and a Japanese version of the message. I've never heard of them turning down a request. Their primary concern is that you're using the program to create models and not re-selling the parts and textures.

anyone else know the answer to this with
reasonable certainty?

i want spaceships for my game,
and the longterm goal is commercial
deployment. i do not wish to waste my time
and energy with something that will
eventually be illegal, BUT IF IT IS LEGAL,
then DoGA is certainly a godsend.

Okay, I KNOW THIS WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY. (happy?)

I've taken the time to translate a number of their Japanese language documents including their charter. I 'moderate' the DoGA English language BBS. I communicate a few times a year with Team DoGA. I've personally asked for and have gotten permission for game development from Team DoGA.

I can not speak for them in an official capacity. But in general, once you export away from DoGA (say, to an .X file) you're in the green, especially if you use custom textures to replace DoGA's defaults.

The translated Bablefish text is hard to follow, but this is the gist of it. Team DoGA owns the parts, but the author owns the images, movies, and models made from the parts. As long as you do not package and re-sell their parts, they have no problem with that. Trying to contact them and let them know that you are using DoGA for a commercial application is a good manners. They don't charge royalties or licensing fees.

thanks.
i did a search for babel fish and it came up only pay sites.
the reason for this forum (i would think) is the free exchange of information. if you have the information, why not give it to me?
(i know you did eventually, but why not at first? and why encourage me to pay for that information?)

i found a babel fish RELATED sight.
this is how it translated my question:

%E7%A7%81%E3%81%AF%E5%95%86%E6%A5%AD%E7%9B%AE%E7%9A%84%E3%81%AE%E3%81%9F%E3%82%81%E3%81%ABDOGA %E3%82%92%E4%BD%BF%E7%94%A8%E3%81%97%E3%81%A6%E3%82%82%E3%81%84%E3%81%84%E3%81%8B%E3%80%82%E7%A7%81%E3%81%AF%E5%AE%87%E5%AE%99%E9%A3%9B%E8%A1%8C%E8%88%B9%E3%81%AE%E3%83%A2%E3%83%87%E3%83%AB%E3%82%92%E4%BD%9C%E3%82%8A%E3%81%9F%E3%81%84%E3%81%A8%E6%80%9D%E3%81%84%E3%80%81%E3%81%9D%E3%82%8C%E3%82%89%E3%82%92%E7%A7%81%E3%81%8C%E6%84%9F%E8%AC%9D%E3%81%99%E3%82%8B%E9%96%8B%E7%99%BA%E3%81%97%E3%81%A6%E3%81%84%E3%82%8B%E3%83%93%E3%83%87%E3%82%AA%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%E3%81%A7%E4%BD%BF%E7%94%A8%E3%81%99%E3%82%8B%E3%81%9F%E3%82%81%E3%80%82

perhaps this has meaning to some.
but not to me.

i appreciate your help,
but it seems that there are a lot of people on this forum
who would rather criticize someone's method of asking a question,
than actually answer the question. i am not saying this is what you did, i just wish people would be more upfront and forthcoming.

i am not trying to make an enemy, i am trying to understand your motivation

thanks,
bob

1. I thought my first reply was quite clear.

2. If you would have gone to Team DoGA's page at:
http://www.doga.co.jp/enlgish You would have found a free link to a very nice translation web site. Jim Breen also has free translation resources here: http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/japanese.html

3. I didn't force (nor even encourage) you to pay for anything. I'm sorry your google-fu is not worthy. ^_^

4. If you don't have Japanese fonts installed, there could be a problem. That might be uni-code as well. Which browser are you using?

5. I read and reply to dozens of message a day on a volunteer basis. I try to be helpful in my slightly acidic way. I can not write an essay for every one. The usual drill is to answer a question and get a feel for the poster's level of experience.

6. I expect people to learn by pulling themselves up by their boot straps. It's how I learned. And, I've found that spoon feeding people results is sub standard education.

7. There is no number seven.

I'm really friendlier than I seem, if you have any more questions, I'll do my humble best to answer them.

hey, another doga question:

when i create a .x file from my little DoGA creations,
and bring it into DBP, it's textured exactly like it is
in DOGA. i am only using DOGA L1, so it's just like grey
and blue.

BUT:

when i use the texture object command, it just goes all white.
no color, no texture.
my image/texture files WILL texture other things, but not these
.x files.

is it something in the nature of DoGA ? or .X files ?

is there a way around this? i would really like to texture
my doga creations randomly. (not wanting to have to load 16 of the same model, textured 16 different ways in doga (i understand L2 can pre-texture them, but that is not in the scope of my question))

i DO have the time to write a paragraph or novel or whatever you said you don't...

I'm here, but I'm on central US time (about six hours behind the UK.) So, patience is a virtue. It's been ages since I played with L1 exports, but I would not be surprised if they had zero texture coordinate data since L1 does not use textures at all.

If you're comfortable with L1 to the point that you are exporting models, you should move on up to L2. Same user interface, but with support for textures, multi-jointed models, etc. (You only have to register L2 if you want to make movies.)

If you want to stick with L1. You'll need a program to assign texture coordinates. There are many that can do that: Milkshape 3D, Metasequoia LE, and L3's Object Convertor. If you don't have any of those, drop me an e-mail and I'll send you the Object Convertor.
