i have just bought a geforce mx420 pci from e-bay. it requires a 350 watt psu and when i put it in the screen goes black and nothing happens. the bios is set to pci. i think it may be my psu but i can't tell. i got the case in 2000

Open the case and look for ANY label or NAME on the PSU. If there are no labels or names than you can always use a digital (ampere) meter.

But really, I ran an geforce3 ti 200 (much better than your MX) on a 230Watt psu, with no single problem.
