Wow, there are literally hundreds of programs that you can use with DBC and DBP. Instead of looking for specific titles, look at the 2D, 3D, and audio formats that DB supports.

IMHO You shouldn't gat much of the stuff from the TGC web site I downloaded most of it and it wasn't all that great(just what I think you should try them for yourself), and there is actually alot of stuff out there thats free. I would recomend Cartography Shop though, I got it and it seems really good.If you want to look for free stuff there are a couple stickys on the forums that have links to web sites.

Not sure about darkmatter, but for a collection of programs, you'll basically need one for each type of media: Image,Modelling,Music,Texture,etc...
I use : Photoshop,Maya5,FruityLoops, and I don't have a texturer yet.
Oh yeah, and a world editor. But I just make my own for each major project

.........what's the point of reading this?

Are there any programs that I need to stay away from?

In other words are not good.

For game development you need to keep your polygon count at a reasonable level. Spline based and nurbs modelling programs tend to export 3D models with 10K-20K polygons, usually too high for game use. So Rhino 3D or Animation Master would not be good choices. Some programs can not export to formats that DB can use, they will require extra steps for file conversion.
