"Index of" "Name Last modified Size Description" "xxxxxxxxx"

Type that into Google, replacing the x's with something interesting, and you'll be able to browse index's of sites where the webmaster was too dumb to lock them down. People have found entire books (Harry Potter, Michael Crichton, etc.) and other interesting things. Myself, I accidentally stubmled across hundreds of SNES ROMs. I didn't take them, but if I wanted to, it was all open.

There are other Google "hacks" out there that are really cool. Some people have found Excel spreadsheets with bank account information! Webmasters could learn a thing or two about how to implement robots.txt properly!

Post some others if you find them

EDIT: The Register has an interesting article about "googledorking": http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/03/10/the_perils_of_googling/

How fun. Almost as fun as searching for "cv.doc" (try advanced search for specific file types)

And the best thing is:

When the sites are found, they are cached. So you can always get them for free (webmasters cant delete the cached items)

I managed to find the MySQL database details for a site.

NOTE I only found the file, didn't not maliciously attempt to alter their database data.

Google also has some awesome power behind it. A while back it changed its logo, as it does, to a fractal design... you click it on, it runs google image search on a certain type of fractal. It put several sites down because of the hundreds of thousands of hits it made to those sites it turned up. That's pretty scary, huh? No grounds for lawsuit or anything either. If they decide they don't like you, they just change their logo to represent your site, and search for it on a click, and you're gone!

Not that they would. Google is cool .

That's a bit of an old one o_0

There a link to it when you search a URL, I think.
