Pong is the easiest for a beginner. I find it easier than the examples that come with Dark Basic.

just make a simple avoiding game where things are coming at you and you have to dodge them.

It depends what you want to do. If you want to make a game that already has a lot of examples you can look at then I'd go for pong. If you want to go straight to 3d then obviously go for Chris Knotts tut. If you want to learn more about advanced commands like arrays then go for space invaders or if you want to make something a little different go for FOGGIE!'s idea. This was actually the first game I made but in mine you shot th enemies instead of dodging them.
