Decades ago, they were used to prevent monitors from burning images into the screen. (Hence the name.) Now, they're just software toys that auto-run after a certain amount of inactivity. The actual time delay is a user control value. Just right click on your desktop and go to properties to edit your screen saver settings.

They also provide some minimal utility in that you can lock out people if you are away from the computer for a while.

has there been a screensaver that has been made yet that tells you how long it has been running for because they can be used if you are away from your computer for privacy and if one has a timer on you know if someone has touched it.

well I could use it for things like that, but I am just wondering if it would be OK to go ahead and dissable it, i read somewhere to disable it when your using it and then enable it when you leave. but I don't want to keep doing that so I'm wondering if I should just leave it on or if I can dissable it for good?

on my old computer I had it to where you needed a password to get by the screensaver, on this one I have the option for when it gets off of the screensaver, it logs me out

Once I dreamt that I fell into a lake full of the undead and demons. I screamed and hollered as my kitten jumped into it with me. None of my friends helped me.

I don't trust them anymore.

Ding!

There is one screen saver that I know that is useful. Project SETI has a screen saver that will use your inactive CPU to run number crunchy stuff for the project. A nice and geeky reason to have a screen saver if you want one.

Disabling a screen saver does not give you much horsepower back since they are only really active when you are not. I've never noticed any significant gain in disabling them.
