Can't really comment on this, as Darkbasic is a programming language while Torque is a c++ library

Both have its advantages and disadvantages.

How are you with c++, defining classes and constructors etc. If you not good with c++, then you may find Torque hard. Although saying this, i have read that Torque is more aimed at scripting then coding.

Darkbasic Pro is very good in my opinion and i like it, i have used C++ as well, but this was academic level, and also used the allegro library with c++ (still do )

It really depends on you

TORQUE is wayyyy better (sorry DB'rs). It comes with everything you need to make an awesome fully 3D game. EVERYTHING!. Try the demo then buy it. I bought it and love it. But DarkBASIC is also really good.

Oh, and by the way, this is a poll not a survey

Err.. it doesn't come with everything you need at all. It doesn't have a lightmapping tool, a model editor, a sound editor/processor, music package, animation package or any books available to help code with it. Granted DBPro doesn't include all of that either, but to say Torque will do it all is just plain wrong. It'll do very little more (or less) than any other lanuage/library out there.

With our species on the edge of extermination,
with no prospect but a horrible death,
we actually played games.

I think the post above yours said that to be fair...

Sounds like you've come in with a loaded poll here.....

I like Dark Basic Pro. Not much more I can really say.

Torque is very good, but there's something about DBP that I'm just glued to.

Richard_davey is right, torque does not come with everything, you still need to pay for other items of s/ware.
This thread can turn into the flaming thread, i just want to add that both are good, but it depends on the user programming skill, not the library or s/ware.

If you are a good programmer, then you can produce something decent and commercial, regardless of the package be it darkbasic pro or torque.

Look at the creator of Riftspace as an example of what Darkbasic can achieve commerically.

Don't go buying a package and expecting it doing the work for you, you have to invest in the time, designing and developing the project. Thats the hardest part

I own and use both, but I have to say DBP is easier to use. In my experience it's hard to shape the Torque engine to do whatever you want.

And no, you don't have to use C++ with the Torque engine--- it's got its own scripting language if you want to go the easier route. Tribes II was made with the Torque engine so it's got some clout.

Better question. Can you live with the Torque license? DBP has no restrictions.

I've played demos in both languages and I've honestly seen better stuff in the DBP showcase. But, to get that good requires just as much work as any other development environment.

Torque is a good engine, however only if you use it as a Library Engine for C++.
Add to that it doesn't have even half the more advanced features that DarkBASIC Professional has considering it is still clinging onto DirectX 8.0 as the base.

As languages, DarkBASIC Professional is a league ahead right now. If you use it as a Library in C++ the tables are certainly flipped as DBP is still struggling with the actual programming basics.

operators like !=, /=, +=, -=, *=, &, %, etc... REALLY need to be added, as do properly integrating types and definitions to allow the language to expand itself.

OOP would be nice too .

I guess it depends on how you use it and how well you can use it with math(DBP or Torque).

AMD Atherlon 2400+ XP, 380 DDr memeory, ATI Radeon 9000 64 DDR, Windos XP home edition.

That's pretty non restrictive for the casual hobbier if you ask me. I would be happy to be faced with the problem of having more than $250,000 in sales!

Torque looks to me a bit nicer. However, I was wondering if anyone has heard of or used "3D gamestudio" ([href]www.3dgamestudio.com[/href]), and if so, what they thought of it. Also if you're looking for something cheeper and easier with decent results, check out [href]www.3drad.com[/href].

Has anyone tried the Irrlicht engine? It's free, and the demos look pretty good. I downloaded it but I haven't given it a good read yet.
