My first advice is to not do an RPG quite yet. If you are a complete noob, then you should make smaller games such as Pong or Space Invaders and work your way up to big RPG games. After you acquire the experience, then you would start by organizing the game, in other words writing down every component of the game onto paper. So for example you would draw your menus, list the characters, develop a storyline, items, battles, anything an RPG requires. Then you begin coding your skeleton code, which is the base code to run your whole game. You will also need a source of media, which includes JPEGs and MIDIs, along with others. After you set up your skeleton code, you will have to implement code for each town or area of a map, i.e. caves and such. Include these files into your game and keep developing the various systems your game needs to function correctly. Eventually if you stick through it, you will have an RPG. But like I said, you will need to start with the basics and learn basic commands before moving onto a game of this level.

You will have to learn the basics first. You did not indicate which program you have or if you have any previous programming knowledge so I say learn the basics.

Printing Text.
Variables and then printing variables.
Doing math examples cause you can not write many programs without using basic math.
Look at the LimitRush tutorial on this website (DarkBasic Classic) but even if you are using pro you can learn alot of the basics as well as some little tricks in the programming. Then check out the beginners tutorials that are at the top of the forums.

When you get these basics you are well along your way on being able to start any game you want and it will not take you that long to get to that point. But just like you have to crawl before you walk you have to have the basics or you will have a hard time building up your programming knowledge because you will have a hard time grasping concepts that people will give you to help you with your programming problems that you may find along the way.

I know this is most likely not what you wanted to hear but it will help you more than you realize.

Wasting CPU Cycles since the 286 was a hot machine.

Very well said. *nods* That's the spirit, boy!

Just a few cents: Don't set your goals too high, or you'll never reach it. I realized that while trying to make a shooter that uses dynamically loaded entities for bullets, which totally crapped the fps and made it virtually unpractical (In DBC, but ideally that's how it should go if I were to rewrite it in C).
